I remember the Red Road Flats...and some of the stories attached to them...

On a slightly similar theme;

Here, snapped a couple of days ago, are 'Silo D' (1920) and the 'Millenium Mills' (1933) viewed from underneath the flyover of the Docklands Light Railway on the route between West Silvertown and Pontoon Dock stations adjacent to the Royal Victoria Dock. Silo D was granted Grade II listed status in 1999. Millennium Mills enjoys 'Local Listing' conservation status only although this will still endow a certain amount of protection to the edifice.

The entire surrounding area has been cleared as part of a multi-billion pound redevelopment scheme. Plans are as changeable as Edinburgh Weather but at the moment The Millennium Mills building alone is slated to be turned into "400 luxury loft-style flats" (what a surprise) with the whole development likely to contain some 4,600 houses.

When me and my mates were in shorts, long before gentrification of that area, we used to ride our 5 speed racing bikes through that area after getting off the woolwich ferry, then taking a left at Canning Town and proceeding through the Rotherhithe Tunnel. Obviously we didn’t tell our parents! The word I’m looking for to describe it then is “gritty”😂. But (putting the housing aside), I love what’s being done to it now to be honest, insofar as I never would have thought it.

To be perfectly honest, Ray, I'm very happy to hear about the whole housing concept as well. Many people I know consider 'Gentrification' of an area to be a bad idea but I don't subscribe to that point of view as long as some provision is made for those on lower-income levels as well as the folks who will be in the market for the "Luxury Loft-Style Flats".

Looking at the way things used to be back-then through 'Rose-coloured Glasses' is all very well up to a point but there's a lot to be said for having an indoor toilet...

100%, my only worry being that we’re reliant on politicians to ensure said provision and, well, you know….but the relevant apportionment seems to have been provided for in that area so all good. Anyway, back on topic, I don’t want to get in trouble here.
