Diagnose My Flare

This is with the 28 Summicron Asph with the standard huge hood. No filter. I assume the flare to the right of the picture is from internal reflection and can't really be avoided because the sun is so central in the frame?

Flare can be suppressed but not entirely eliminated. I used to own the 28mm Summicron and I'd say that your example is consistent with how mine behaved. If you want a lens which will potentially flare less then use a smaller aperture lens (= smaller elements and less surface area to reflect light from and cause flare - I believe that the current 28/2.8 is very good in this respect. Faster lenses have a tendency to flare when pointed into the light as you have.
