UliWer Posted October 25, 2018 Share #1 Posted October 25, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today the official version of the Leica Fotos App has been released - so it‘s time to share some experiences how it works with the M10, M10-P and perhaps in a couple of days the new M10-D. The App and/or the camera firmware of other Leica Models (S, SL, Q, CL, TL etc) may be different in certain respects, so it seems more helpful to share the users‘ opinion about each camera type seperately. I am using an M10 with firmware 2.6.5.0 and the App‘s version 1.0.0 for iOS. On first try (with iPhone8 ) the app and the connection to the camera worked - other than with the last Beta-Version which made the camera freeze and becoming unworkable, and I only could start it again by taking off and insert again the battery. Second try: the app froze becoming unworkable on the device. Camera was o.k. Third try: connection worked again. Some general observation: The app still shows the scene on LiveView only on the vertical screen of the device. This is bad, since you cannot use the full screen of your device especially when the camera is in horizontal mode. The LV scene on an iPhone is much smaller than on the camera‘s device - even though the screen of an iPhone 8 is much larger. You cannot zoom into LiveView or move the focus point. This was possible with the „old“ Leica M app - even with the M10 which has no touch screen. When you look at your photo in the „gallery“ you can use vertical as well as horizontal mode and can zoom in. This is o.k. for looking at your photos, but the limitations described above are not so good for taking photos. The whole process of starting the WLAN and connecting the camera to the app takes about 50 sec. I‘ ll need more time to see if using the WLAN is still draining the battery as much as before. Advertisement Posted October 25, 2018 Posted October 25, 2018 Hi UliWer, Take a look here Leica Fotos App - does it work with M10 ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
hteasley Posted October 26, 2018 Share #2 Posted October 26, 2018 (edited) Based on the title of the thread: Yes. You need the latest firmware on the M10. The M10 unfortunately needs a lens it can recognize for the purposes of live view mounted. I had an adapted LTM lens mounted and it wouldn't work. M11 for me Posted October 26, 2018 Share #4 Posted October 26, 2018 its actually great. A bit a pitty that when using the remote control then the screen on the M10 is constantly on as well. And when going into the M10 menu to switch the monitor off then the remote control dies not work any more. It would be nice if that could be fixed as one might use a lot of battery power unnecessairely. BTW I have a iOS version on an iPhone 6.
M11 for me Posted October 26, 2018 Share #5 Posted October 26, 2018 What is intersting as well is the fact that with the remote control function we can set ISO and shutter speed even when these dials on the camera are NOT set to „A“. That means that the Fotos App overrules the manual settings except for the aperture setting on the lens (that is fully mechanical of course). The app does not show the „guessing“ of the set aperture either.
willeica Posted October 26, 2018 Share #6 Posted October 26, 2018 Doesn't work. Neither my iPhone 8 nor my Huawei P20, with the latest software will read the QR Code produced by my M10 with the latest firmware. I have wasted a lot of time this morning messing around with this. I also note that now the Leica M app, which I have only used a couple of times, most recently this morning, will not work either. Anyone hoping to use this to look at the photos on their M10-D should proceed with caution. William
UliWer Posted October 26, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted October 26, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Do you use the latest firmware 2.6.5.0 for the M10 and the latest iOS and Android version for the app? The (old) Leica M App had an update recently to make it work together with firmware 2.6.5.0.again. Though I am not sure whether using both Apps really works. When I tried the Leica M App recently - and it worked - I had constant camera freezings afterwards with the Fotos App, which I never had before. I am not sure about the causality, but I could not find any other reason for the contstant freezing with the Fotos App than my preceding trial with the M App Edited October 26, 2018 by UliWer

I will stick with that until somebody enlightens me as to how the QR Code can be read with either of my phones. They just remain unresponsive when I point hem at the code. It sounds to me that FOTOS was released before it was ready. William
Nordvik Posted October 26, 2018 Share #9 Posted October 26, 2018 I can not get any closer than this before the QR code is detected. I had to choose both SL and M10-P before I could get a screenshot. If I get closer it connect instantly. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! They just remain unresponsive when I point them at the code. Choose the type of camera you want to connect in the app. Start the WLAN of your camera. When the QR-code appears on your camera‘s display, enter „Scan QR—Code“ in the app. A Liveview photo scene will appear on the display of your phone. Go close with the phone’s camera near the QR-code on your M camera. The QR-code should be rather sharp on your phone‘s display, but it is not necessary that it‘s absolutely sharp. It also does not make any difference whether your phone is in vertical or horizontal mode, the QR code only has to be clear on the display of your phone. You do not have to take a photo of the QR-code, just Liveview on the display. You should then see a notice that you camera is found on the phone. You get another notice which asks you, if you want to connect your camera. You enter Yes. It takes about 10 sec. until the camera is connected. I agree with you that the app was released before it was really usable. Though the connection by QR-code is the only function of the app which always worked in my experience since early september. Thanks. I have done all of this with 3 different phones, but it does not work. My 22 year old grandson, who knows about these things, says that the QR Code on my M10 is probably not readable. All 3 phones will happily read other codes. I don't really need FOTOS as the Leica M app provides the same functionality and it works on my iPhone. I am just curious about this as I cannot think of any real world application for either app that would be useful to me other than taking selfies, which I don't do. I am a bit concerned about how people with the M10-D ( I won't be one) will get on with this, but I understand that the M10-D will have the QR Code (hopefully readable) on the base. I feel like a guy trying to explain about a problem with my car to a garage mechanic which does not make sense to him. William
M11 for me Posted October 26, 2018 Share #12 Posted October 26, 2018 Just as a matter of interest: I think that the „old“ app does not work on my M10 any more. Is this correct?

Your simple SE iPhone is the last great iPhone as I see it. Later ones are too big and ugly. Hope mine will last for at least five more years.
Desmoprem Posted October 27, 2018 Share #18 Posted October 27, 2018 After deleting the old M-10 app from my iPhone 6S and updating the firmware, I connected to the Fotos app with no problem. It recognized my WLAN without any additional input by me and began to operate as advertised. It seems all features work properly at this time. I think, for the most part, I will only be using this app as a remote shutter release when camera is on a tripod for macro, but perhaps I will use the file transfer some when on the road. All in all, I am pleased with this first release and I'm sure Leica will improve upon the app to make it more usable in the future.

bencychin Posted October 27, 2018 Share #20 Posted October 27, 2018 Today, i downloaded the Leica Fotos Apps onto my iphone 7, and was able to register SL, CL and Q without any problem, but not successful M10P in first attempts. I asked my friend who helped me resolve the missing link - i need to update my FW to 2.6.5.1 from 2.6.5.0. Otherwise the M10P will not display the required QR code. So it is now registered and working. Hope this may help others who encounter the missing QR code in their M10P. cheers! Benedict
