I have a question regarding the behavior of the 6-bit code auto detection and tagging of EXIF data in combination with uncoded lenses.

I understand the way the "AUTO" detection now works is that when selected, 6-bit coded lenses will be correctly detected and uncoded lenses will be assigned the last used manual profile one can select in the lens detection menu.

My issue is that I have a very large number of uncoded lenses that I DO NOT want to have coded with one of the Leica lens codes but at the same time I DO WANT to have my 6-bit coded Leica lenses to be automatically detected and coded.

I have not found a setting that will allow this to happen 😞

Currently I am forced to always remember to turn off AUTO lens detection when mounting a lens I don't want to be wrongly coded with a Leica code and remember to turn it back on when mounting a 6-bit coded Leica lens.

I tend to forget about this menu profile switching as I am used to just swap lenses without having to dive into the camera menu.

Did I set something wrong? Did I overlook a setting that will help me to keep my 6-bit coded lenses (all my modern Leica lenses are 6-bit coded in Solms/Wetzlar) but at the same time leave my uncoded lenses without a wrongfully assigned code and EXIF data?

The way it is working now really upsets my Lightroom metadata and my workflow of manually tagging lenses in Lightroom based on having no EXIF data.

The way it worked on past digital Leicas was so much better as uncoded lenses … well were left uncoded (if not having been found in error to resemble a certain lens code as of the lens mount screw hole pattern).

Since the M10 detects any coded lens automatically as long as you don't switch lens detection off, there is no problem:

Put on an uncoded lens and go to the menu for "Lens detection" and  then to "Manual M" (or even "Manual R") and choose a lens detection for your lens (or any similar one) from the list. The lens will be detected with all "corrections" and the identification in the EXIF. As soon as you put on a coded lens afterwards, the M10 will identify the code and use the proper detection, without any changes in the menu - it just works automatically. If you switch back to your uncoded lens your manual settings will be working again. This is ideal if you only use one uncoded lens and several coded ones: you just choose the manual detection for your single uncoded lens, the automatic function for coded lenses will work for all your other  lenses on it's own.

Only if you use several uncoded lenses one after the other, you have to choose the lens detection for each one separately from the menu. Though if you forget to do this it is not really important. Recently I used a 28, 35, 50 and 90mm - all uncoded and switched a lot from one lens to the other - and I often forgot to change the lens detection from the menu. Of course I got wrong data in the EXIF, but I don't see any issues on the photos.

If I am understanding your problem, you want to be able to run an EXIF search based on lens data, without including your uncoded lenses in the search results. And without having the camera apply any "lens corrections" to uncoded lenses.

As to the second problem, remember that the primary corrections are essentially zero for lenses 50mm and longer  (and on the M10, even a 35mm) - that is, the removal of  "color" vignetting (those are the only corrections applied by the camera.) So using Uliwer's technique, just be sure that your "default non-coded" setting under "M lenses" is - any of your non-coded lenses 50mm or longer.

As to the search, in addition to the above, pick a "default non-coded" focal length in the menu, for which you have no coded equivalent - that will prevent uncoded lenses from showing up in searches for your coded focal lengths.

I use (currently) a coded 21mm, and non-coded 28, 50 and 135 lenses. I set the manual "M lens" menu ID to 50mm, and all my 28-50-135 lenses show as "50mm Summicron-M." Which is inaccurate, but not really any different than getting "focal length ----, Max Aperture f/1.0" as I would have with an M9.

If, in addition, I also had a coded 50 of some kind, I could just choose 135 as the default for "no code" (or 75 or 90 for that matter.) And EXIF-search for "50mm", and not see my uncoded 50 results.

The default on the M10 for uncoded lenses is 'Manual R' which I've never bothered to change. So if I mount a coded lens the camera records it in the EXIF file, an uncoded lens shows up as 'Manual R' (but you could choose 'Manual M', but I know what 'R' means, it means any uncoded M lens, are you confused yet?)
