Issue with Photoshop CC 2019 Version 20.0

I loaded Photoshop CC 2019 Version 20.0 today.  Sometimes it will open.  But sometimes it won't open.   When it doesn't, I have to restart my computer and try again.  The error log has been sent to Apple.

I use a MacPro (late 2013), leased new in April 2018; I am running MacOS Mojave 10.14.0.  I have 6 cores and 32 GB of RAM.

I know it is not advised to use new software, but I am an early adopter.

After a long chat session with Adobe support, we determined that my setting were corrupted during the installation process.  The Tech person deleted my settings.  I had to rebuild them from scratch.  But all seems to be working correctly now.

Well, all was working for four days.  Now I'm back to where I was on Monday.  Sometimes Photoshop CC 2019 won't open unless I reboot.  Two more error logs have gone to Apple.  I re-contacted the chat person at Adobe, but I have not gotten a response.  One oddity is that when I click into a new Text Layer, a string of text is automatically pasted in.  The text is in Latin and is several lines long.  I know; I shouldn't be an early adopter.

My Photoshop began crashing every time I opened it. Zapping the preferences fixed it. Reboot was not necessary.  It remains a bit of a pain to reset each.

To stop Photoshop pasting in the Lorem ipsum placeholder text go to Photoshop preferences - Type and untick 'Fill new type layers with placeholder text'. Here’s a screen shot

That's it exactly for the text.  Thanks for your help.  And I did try to use Google Translate, and it was not able to translate the whole thing.

I did hear back from Adobe, and they do want to get back in touch with me.  We have a time set for tomorrow afternoon.  I am sending this url to Adobe.  What it nice at Adobe is that I now have a single point of contact with a specific e-mail address.

I'd rather re-boot than reset all the preferences.

I’ve never had occasion to move away from the default but I believe these options enable you to choose the text characteristics of those sets of languages. For example, if you were writing Hebrew, Arabic or Urdu text you would want to be able to set the text direction to read from Right To Left. Opting for the Middle Eastern text engine would enable you to do that.

As I understand it, both options also provide for the European languages.

John and Euston, have you ever been to Silicon Valley?  These people think they know better than you do.  They think they should have the exclusive rights to run the world because they do know better.  As a result we get these really weird features from Adobe, and Apple.  At some point, when the software works, they need to call Lightroom, Bridge, ACR and Photoshop "done", and then fire all the people who constantly twizzle with the software.

What you regard as a really weird feature may be really useful to me. I’ve been using home computers for 30 years. When I consider what I can do with computers now compared with what I could do then, I give thanks for the gifted people who always saw their software as a work in progress and never “done”.

New algorithms are being discovered all the time. No software should ever be considered “done”.

I imagine that Silicone Valley people think they know better than us because they have examined some item in sufficient detail to implement it on a computer. We have nothing to show that we have noticed let alone analysed any particular process or methodology.

This has nothing to do with algorithms or improving the product. The 'twizzling' around, as you call it, by all the software and service majors is designed to get customers onto subscription services and to flog 'cloud real estate'. The manipulation by the likes of Apple, Google, Microsoft and Adobe etc, is constant and pernicious and, despite the lack of competition , or maybe because of it, there is little that regulators or consumers can do to counteract this.

There is very little digital stuff which lives in isolation and can survive in a static environmental bubble. Eg offline storage media - can you buy an 8” floppy drive still? Eg application software - can you run VisiCalc on any computer still? Hardware wears out - batteries no longer manufactured, screens extinct, the old Quad electrostatic speakers - ICI no longer makes the plastic sheets which take the role of the cone in a regular speaker. People think paper books last; if I used a paper book as much as I use my iPad it would also need replacing every few years.

Consequently software needs to be kept up to date. This was done in the recent past by selling new versions every two years but as this time scale produced massive changes many people became afraid. A better solution is incremental change and subscriptions to pay for it. User retraining is minimised/spread out. We get a better product which also remains compatible with the infrastructure (hardware, OS) available to us.

Some people imagine they want a simple product which works the same way forever. Unfortunately there are very few of them; the production costs spread out over the user base would come to hundreds of thousands of €.

Sorry for the disjointed rant. Not all of capitalism is designed for maximum rip-off.

When I get a new MacPro that is not over 5 years old in design, instead of getting a stream of new emojis, I'll stop complaining.  I don't mind "East Asian" and "Middle East", but where is "Northern European".

I had a very nice telephone session with Adobe customer support.  There is an issue with Photoshop CC 2019 V20.0 and MacOS Mojave.  It has to do with graphics processor conflicts.  There will be a new version of Photoshop CC 2019 available in about 1 week.  For now the problem with opening can be circumvented by going to Preferences / Performance and unchecking Use Graphics Processor.  This will slow down Photoshop CC somewhat, but will prevent it from locking up.  The issue is more likely to occur with large files, such as those from my Nikon D810.

The Type Preference related to "East Asian" has to do with the keyboard and languages.  She did not know why the name "East Asian" was chosen, but it is the default and is appropriate to US and European users.
