Sony alpha rumors site is reporting that a new full frame Panasonic will be announced and "It will probably use the Leica SL mount and be compatible with their six lenses"

https://www.sonyalpharumors.com/not-canon-and-not-nikon-but-panasonic-might-be-the-most-serious-sony-a7-a9-competition-check-out-what-they-will-launch-on-spetember-25/

Not sure this is accurate but could be very interesting.

This may well be a rumor that has looped around and amplified in its retelling. More or less like the supposed Leica C-M. It's really hard to believe that Leica would allow anyone to undercut their SL, especially when there is solid belief in an SL2 reasonably soon.

OTOH, at Photokino, Panasonic's press conference is scheduled to come right after Leica's and in the same room.

Not impossible, though. The cooperation between Leica and Panasonic is tight and formalized in contracts. It may well be that Leica will sell more lenses this way. The margins on lenses are probably higher than on cameras.

If Panasonic positions the camera between SL and CL pricewise there may well be a mutually profitable situation.

i.e.: CL -> simplified SL -> Top-end SL2.

That would be very sensible cooperative approach, utilising strength of each business fully.

Some clear opportunities here...

1.  For a typical user savings realised by buying Panasonic instead of Leica badge SL2 can be used to Buy Leica L lenses.

2. Panasonic probably have bigger market exposure than Leica hence bigger potential for Leica to sell lenses.

3. Even future Panasonic made lenses could be branded as Leica as is the case with many MTF lenses.

In a separate thread we were discussing reliability, there is an implicit consensus that SL system have much higher reliability than either M or S systems, so who is to say that Panasonic dint have their very positive involvement already.

Pure speculation on my side, though...

Possibly part of/what of Dr Kaufmann hinted at in this LL-interview?

June rumour at the time was very strong but went quiet suddenly.  From memory we were expecting to see "C-M" full frame, EVF compact with L mount.

If this thing materialise that would probably be bigger, much much bigger, deal than silent shutter in M10P  :p

And it  would allow Leica market penetration on a price level they don't want to sell their brand on. Something like Toyota-Lexus.

Correct, but remember that the video was taken long before it was published. In addition, Leica and time/date can be far from our standard calendars...

Panasonic holds the patent for the 90-280mm SL lens and who knows what else.   Electronics in SL are better than other Leica I've used.   Leica SL sales were lagging, not sure about present situation.  The facts support cooperation and  it's been successful for Leica with P&S.

Panasonic possibly holds the patent for the 'dual syncro drive' AF system if I recall correctly ...... although Leica holds the trademark. As far as I am aware all the rest of the lens components are Leica designed and manufactured.

Furthermore I would suspect the dual drive was proposed by Leica with the SL lenses in mind and Panasonic came up with the solution, not the other way round.

A $3k FF body that accepts Leica lenses.  Ah, what a wonderful dream. I've personally "heard" that they will merge into one company: Leicasonic.

But we have only 12 more days to produce several more pages of speculation to match the number we produced in June for the now much-beloved, best-selling C-M .

I'm going to double post this with the discussion in CL/TL because I've traced the rumor on the Panasonic with a Leica SL/TL mount.

The Sony site says this:

– It will probably use the Leica SL mount and be compatible with their six lenses (those are expensive but also very good lenses)

https://www.sonyalph...ategory/rumors/

It cites as its authority here:https://www.43rumors.com/

But this is what 43 rumors says:

There is still one major thing we have to learn about: The lens roadmap…I hope there are many fast primes and zoom right from the start! If it used theleica SL mount we will at least have sixe lenses avaialable now. They have great quality but also a great price (see here:(

That's it! pure speculation. "IF it used...."

and that is how we get "probably"....
