UliWer Posted September 13, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 13, 2018 "The Leica Manual" by Morgan&Lester came in many editions and was still published during "M-times" - it was perhaps the best "manual" for using Leica cameras - certainly in English. https://openlibrary.org/works/OL10789567W/Leica_manual_and_data_book

M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 13, 2018 The best edition by far is the last - the 15th edition (1968?). This is the description (pilfered from a seller’s website: “Leica Manual: The Complete Book of 35mm Photography Hardcover - by Douglas O. Morgan, David Vestral, William L Broeker Everything needed to employ a 35mm camera to maximum artistic expression and commercial success--from hardware to film to technique--with a very nice selection of Ernst Haas color images, and b&w photography by Cartier-Bresson, Kertesz, Erwitt, McBride, Rothstein, Gatewood, Natali, Wolff and others. Essays by Ansel Adams, William Garnett, Arthur Goldsmith, Barbara Morgan, Beaumont Newhall, Arthur Rothstein, and others. 528 pages; 16 color plates, 50 pages of full-page b&w plates plus b&w photos throughout; 8 x 10.5 inches.”

willeica Posted September 13, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2018 I have it (1937 version) on Kindle, but I cannot recall where I got it. I must admit that I have never used it extensively and have only given it a cursory read. I have a lot of Leica books from that period and a fairly complete set of original Leica manuals and catalogues from throughout the 1930s plus the Hove reprints. It seems, however, to be as good as you can get from that period. Leica cameras from that period are pretty straightforward and the only issues that arise are when you want to do specialised close up work or something similar. Andrew Matheson's book 'The Leica Way' from the 1950s also covers 1930s equipment from the 1930s such as the 250FF. William
wlaidlaw Posted September 13, 2018 Share #7 Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I want to buy a late edition of this book. I have a 1936 2nd edition book (not pdf) but I want the one that covers the operation and adjustment of the Visoflex 1 (M mount version) extensively. I think that is the 13th or 14th edition but not sure. I have PDF's of the first and third editions as well Wilson Edited September 13, 2018 by wlaidlaw

I also have a 4 page Hove reprint of instructions for the Visoflex I . PM me if you want a copy. William
alan mcfall Posted September 13, 2018 Share #9 Posted September 13, 2018 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Many years ago, for reasons that now escape me, I collected every Leica Manual. Not just every edition, but every printing of every eddition. Sometimes the second or even third printing run contained some new information or an insert updating a recent change. By my count, there are 28 different copies. Admittedly, some have only minor revisions. I agree that the 15th and final edition is a must read. The original first edition, first printing is probably the hardest to find. It was even reprinted.
 Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2018 The 13th and 14th eds. of the Leica Manual are painfully sparse on the Visoflex I (pp. 73-4 and 78-9 respectively) - basically one paragraph! By the 15th, the attention is on Visoflex III and Leicaflex. Matheson (11th ed.) is much fuller, pp. 508-15 on Viso I and II, and 114-26 on Viso III, with charts, essential equipment codewords/code numbers and correspondences, etc. I highly recommend it. M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #11 Posted September 13, 2018 This is an original 1935 first ed. (left) and 1977 reprint (right). Welcome, dear visitor! wlaidlaw Posted September 13, 2018 Share #12 Posted September 13, 2018 My Matheson is for both Leica and Leicaflex and is the 9th edition from 1969. It does have three pages on the Visoflex 1 but all relatively superficial stuff. It may be I am expecting too much. What I would love would be flow diagrams like the Visoflex II and III manuals have, showing lenses, adapters and extension tubes. On the Lester and Morgan, as the bayonet version of the Visoflex 1 did not come out until 1953, I would expect that only the 13th edition forward would cover it. Maybe I should be looking for the 15th edition. A French seller has contacted me via Facebook, offering me a 400mm f5 Telyt but I cannot see me ever using it. I sold my 400/560 Telyt/Televit kit earlier this year as I just never used them. Wilson
M9reno Posted September 13, 2018 Share #13 Posted September 13, 2018 (edited) Wilson, again I think Matheson´s 11th edition is what you want. The 15th edition of the Leica manual is not interested in Viso I. Edited September 13, 2018 by M9reno

romualdo Posted October 2, 2018 Share #17 Posted October 2, 2018 Wilson, Is this what you are looking for - Visoflex I as "flow chart" From a brochure on the Universal Focusing Bellows, including the Visoflex I setup - I think the brochure is from 1960 (VIII/60/FY/SD on back page - does that mean 1960?) The brochure is 10 pages long (quite comprehensive IMHO) - I can copy it & send it to you as a PDF if you like It primarily discusses screwmount lenses but there is a footnote mentioning the UOOND adapter to take complete M lenses (35 & 50 I presume) BTW I'm currently "playing about" with the Visoflex I (have both screwmount & M versions) & II/bellows systems (including screwmount & M lenses) - trying the many adapters (many compatible with both systems I've found out) Right now I'm looking for 1. OTZFO / OTRPO / OTSRO set -> universal Focusing mount -> primarily want to use this with my Elmar 35 f4 head 2. OUFRO extension ring for 35 & 50mm lenses 3. 16558 lens to bellows adapter Yes I know these are all available on ebay (mostly at ridiculous prices) Also I have a ZOOAN Short focusing mount for the Hektor 135 f4.5 head that I don't want - would be happy to trade for any of the above Anyway, contact me if you're interested Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! carbon_dragon Posted October 2, 2018 Share #19 Posted October 2, 2018 I've got the 1961 edition. It has a little of everything, but often as said above, it may not cover everything well. For instance, I have a chrome rimmed 39mm filter labeled IR (it's an IR filter which I think is probably equivalent to maybe a 89A or B, dark dark red) which is listed in my manual. But there is nothing much about it. No explanation. Nice bit of history though. I've picked up catalogs for Leica here and there too and some books. Pyrogallol Posted October 2, 2018 Share #20 Posted October 2, 2018 I have an IR filter, along with other dark reds for infrared film. I find with Rollei 400 infrared film they all need about 5 stops exposure adjustment, including the IR.
