ropo54 Posted September 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted September 6, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Has anyone used the Mamiya 80 1.9 with adapter on the Leica S? It seems to be very compact and quite inexpensive. I would appreciate any thoughts on this lens, and other Mamiya options. Thanks, Rob Edited September 6, 2018 by ropo54
Advertisement Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 Hi ropo54, Take a look here Thoughts on the Mamiya 80 1.9 (and other Mamiya lenses). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
John McMaster Posted September 6, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 6, 2018 I have three Mamiya lenses: 50/4 shift, not got the sparkle of a Leica lens but can be useful 80/1.9 has a look more like a Mandler than the S lenses, not as sharp 300/2.8 nothing to match in Leica line-up, very good lens but harder to find these days. I also recently bought the 645 bellows and adapted a 135mm Schneider Componen-S enlarging lens to it. The 645 bellows have tilt/shift and I plan to use this set-up for close-ups where the 120/2.5 may not be the best choice.... john

BernardC Posted September 7, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 7, 2018 I have an 80/1.9, but I never use it. The 70/2.5 is so much better. The 80 is quite soft wide open, and I find the bokeh busy and distracting compared to the Summarit-S. It's certainly not "magical" like, for instance, an old Planar 50/1.4 is on the SL. I also have a Mamiya 35/2.8, which was bad enough to make me buy the Leica 35. It was OK stopped-down at mid distances, but that was it. I do use the 200/2.8 APO, and matched doubler. Good lens. I rarely feel go to that long, but it's fully up to the task.

darylgo Posted September 8, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2018 (edited) Hi Rob, The Mamiya lenses I've used are surprisingly good, I tested a few against my Contax 645 Zeiss glass. Generally the Mamiya glass is equal to Zeiss in sharpness, colors needed to be adjusted to look Zeiss-like, easily accomplished in post. The Mamiya 200 Apo is not Leica S 180 Apo good, the price is cheap. The 300 Apo has a good reputation and I'm happy with my copy, somewhere between the 280/4R and 280/2.8R IQ, closer to the latter. ropo54 Posted September 11, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted September 11, 2018 Thanks, Daedalus2000, It does seem to look like a Mandler lens. Rob
