onca Posted September 1, 2018 Share #2 Posted September 1, 2018 DIY as in Do It Yourself? I have no German translation. "selber machen"
mich Posted September 1, 2018 Share #3 Posted September 1, 2018 (edited) "selber machen" Actually "Do it yourself" is the accepted expression in Germany. The common language in Germany has become swamped with anglicisms, with the advertising industry being the main culprit! onca Posted September 2, 2018 Share #4 Posted September 2, 2018 Actually "Do it yourself" is the accepted expression in Germany. Well, it´s the expression. But it´s not the translation, that pico asked for. I allways prefer my mother-speech

LocalHero1953 Posted September 2, 2018 Share #6 Posted September 2, 2018 (edited) Would that be a forum about putting up shelves, or about adjusting rangefinder mechanisms? Edited September 2, 2018 by LocalHero1953
jaapv Posted September 2, 2018 Share #7 Posted September 2, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) DIY as in Do It Yourself? I have no German translation. "Heimwerken" or "basteln". In the sense you mean I would use "basteln". A person indulging in DIY will be called a "Bastler"

Guest Posted September 2, 2018 Share #12 Posted September 2, 2018 DIY jobs always require the purchase of new tools. Don't forget enough plasters and gauze bandages and of course a good whiskey to disinfect your wounds and calm your mind afterwards. I know some craftsmen living well payed by completing or fundamentally repairing their customers' semi-finished items.
papimuzo Posted September 2, 2018 Share #13 Posted September 2, 2018 DIY jobs always require the purchase of new tools. Oh yess I know... I have bought a Dremell tool to put holes for 6 bits coding an Elmar 50/3.5 which worked fine after this surgical work. The patient didn't succumbed... onca Posted September 2, 2018 Share #14 Posted September 2, 2018 Well, in this sense you could translate DIY into the german word "verschlimmbessern", which means make it worse afterwards
pico Posted September 2, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted September 2, 2018 (edited) Well, in this sense you could translate DIY into the german word "verschlimmbessern", which means make it worse afterwards Excellent. I appreciate kaputtverbessern because our family knew kaputt from our Canadian grandparents since childhood. (Grandpere was an inventor and craftsman who had little tolerance for things bound to be kaputt at any moment.)
