I keep looking at the lens road map hoping to see a tele converter. Do you think Leica will ever make one for the SL ?

Would really like to have 400mm available to use on a SL. On the otherhand maybe Sigma will make a long lens in L mount.

I doubt that Leica will offer it. If they did, a large number of SL owners could buy the 24-90 and the 2x to get to 180. Many would figure that the 2x would save them $4000 or $5000 dollars and the IQ would be good enough for them and they really only want to get out to 150 or 180. It's probably a safe bet that half of the 90-280 buyers only want a little more than 90, maybe 135, 150 ,180 is all they really want.

You and I want the 2x to get out past 400, but I bet Leica is worried about the 2x cutting into the sales of the 90-280.

I would like a 280-560 or even better 840. If Leica would offer a 280-840 and keep it under $10k, I would snatch it up in a heartbeat.

It will be huge though. 280-840mm.

For long lenses in L-mount, I guess, Sigma is the one to look after. We should soon know.

My concern would be the quality. I've seen a lot of photos shot at 600 on the net showing discolorations around the objects' fringes and in the highlights.

Seems that there is a market for Leica to offer us something in the 400 to 800 range.

We simply have to wait and see. Leica will not offer long lens(es). For years to come, at least, I guess. And the cost would be close to astronomical. The top-end, long CanNikons are already expensive. Multiple that with a Leica-factor, and those lenses would be  e x p e n s i v e.

Some of the long Sigmas are quite ok. And Sigma can put together excellent optics, certainly if they are willing to rise the cost somewhat.

Specialised lenses, long lenses included, is one of the benefits of the L-consortium.

I went through my R lenses today; they have been sitting in a armoire for 7 years since film literally disappeared from our local market.

I have the 70/180 f2.8 and a Leica 2x teleconverter. Put it on my R8 and took it outside. Amazing resolution and detail. So if I get the R adapter, that combo gives 360mm at 5.6 open; that is faster than the current Sigma offerings. I cranked up the ISO on the R8 to see if I could keep the shutter speed above 1250 and it was no problem. Since I had never shot any film above 800, I had no idea how fast the lens could be with ISO 3200; it's fast. The only negative is the lack of auto focus. I went out for an hour with the SL and tried capturing some bird pictures, but the 90 just doesn't have the reach. I would like to try the 90-280 but no one within 500 miles has one for me to borrow. I think I'll end up with the 90-280 just because it covers 70% or more of the shooting I'll do and I'm starting to like autofocus; though tonight it seemed to be stuck on focusing on the nearby branches instead of the birds. When I need more reach, I can use the 360 combo and manually focus like I did for so many years.

If you want more reach, the TL2 & CL with the long zoom gives you 24 MP with 135-420mm and a usable aperture with autofocus.  Could be cheaper and more effective than the alternatives.

Thank you, yes you’re right, I do have a TL for this very reason. I had a long chat with Stephan, asking for longer lenses ... let’s see what comes out of it

Before Leica enters the long-lens territory, we will have the Sigma 500mm f4 Sport in L-mount, I presume. Ignoring the price tag for a moment, the Leica R APO Modular system with AF and IS would be something ...

Do you think the Sigma line will be APS-c lenses like the TL lenses? It seems everyone is assuming that they will be for FF.

None of us are privy to what the L Alliance agreement specifies in that regard.

I would think that we will (mainly) see Sigma and Panasonic FF lenses in L-mount, although Sigma states that APS-C lenses will also be made (https://www.l-rumors.com/sigma-says-yes-we-have-a-plan-to-develop-aps-c-lenses-for-l-mount-panasonic-will-not-make-aps-c-lenses/).

You can buy a CL.  A future teleconverter may cost as much :-)

Is this natural light and cast as seen? Regardless, very cool. I have not seen light like this in person. Jealous.

All natural! I’ve been shooting landscapes for years and this is the first time I saw something like this. Simply magical. The flying birds were the cherry on the top.

Of course, the sacrifice is waking up before sunrise, driving to such spots and waiting for nature to unleash her magic. I do scout for locations and use apps that show the sun’s position for sunrise/sunset.
