Hmong Beauty

We have a very large farmers' market Saturday mornings and about a third of the vendors are Hmong. They are among the most pleasant, congenial people I've met anywhere, such as this lovely woman who was more than happy to allow me to photograph her after I complemented her on her beautiful clothing and hat. Next week I'll take her a print.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, while the Hmong lived in south-western China, their Manchu overlords labeled them 'Miao' (barbarian or savage) and targeted them for genocide when they defied being humiliated, oppressed, and enslaved.

A beautiful picture beautifully executed.

Thanks, Allen. Our country didn't treat them much better during the Vietnam war. As you know, we recruited them to fight the Viet Cong, then abandoned them when it came time for us to get out. It makes me feel good to see these Hmong farmers having good lives in our area today.
