Can I safely fit this lens to my M3, M2 and M10?

yes, yes, yes, any kind of Sonnar can be directly mounted (ZM) or adapted (e39 to M, Amendeo contax to M) to Leica with pretty good results :)

As said above, there are many Sonnar 50mm lenses available, and they all can be used with the Leica M bodies.

Canon 50/1.5

Zeiss 5cm/1.5

Zeiss 50/1.5 ZM

Jupiter - 3

... plus many more.

The lens was originally fitted to a Contax iia

Then you need an Amedeo Contax to M adapter, as suggested by romanus53 above.

They come in two different flavours these days: the 'original' one without focussing lever that will let you mount any Contax lens with a focal length of 50mm and above - and the more recent (and less expensive) one for 50mm lenses that has a focussing lever and the same focus direction and pitch as the Leica 50mm lenses (Elmar, etc.).
