Tracking Gaugin in the Marquesas

After the Provence series with the three painters, it was suggested I go and track Gaugin in the Marquesas and Tahiti archipelago !!!

This journey indeed we did it four years ago, not for Paul Gaugin neither for Jacques Brel , but for the journey itself. The cargo Aranui III took us to the Marquesas and back from Tahiti. Once on the island of Hiva Oa, we have visited a few sites and during the whole trip Gaugin's rendering of the people and the light of the island has probably influenced (not always successfully) my picture taking. This first view is the vista of the town Atuona, on the Hiva Oa, from the cemetery where Gaugin is resting.

All pictures with an M9 I had at the time .

He used to live in  Atuona, in bad terms with the local priest, in a house he has called " La maison du jouir" or "House of sensual delight" according to the official english translation from Musée d'Orsay. The house was destroyed after his death in 1903, but later re constructed based on the original photographies.

The house was also his painting studio with big windows. No original painting or objects are conserved now except what was recently found in the well.

The well was investigated in recent years . Gaugin's used paint tubes, glass containers for his medication, bottles etc.. and a few utilitarian objects were discovered.

This is the view he had . Not much seems to have changed since. (There is no internet connection- one must go into the town post office for wi-fi)

Gaugin had really caught the spirit of the people there, as he did with the Bretons in Pont Aven.

Finally, this is a spot in Pont Aven's woods (France) where he used to come and get inspiration. (yes incidentally we have been there in 2015) Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the instant response. The series is wonderful.

"Melancholy in the shade" is the best interpretation of Gauguin. Her expression, the light, the colors, perfect.
