Picasso in Provence

The third painter we had memories all over in Provence is of course Picasso. To start with, the house we have rented for a week was just across his chateau in Vauvenargues, at the foot of Mount St Victoire (see Cézanne). Looking at the morning and evening light and the surroundings, one understands why Picasso bought this as his last residence. He is buried under the big pine tree on the right. The chateau belongs to his heirs and is not open for visits.

About an hour and half drive from Picasso's chateau, an older chateau, at Baux de Provence dominates the coastal landscape from the top of Alpille mountains. The small valley on the right side was the inspiration location for Dante's Inferno. The chateau has been built from local stones taken from a quarry operated since historical times.

The Stone quarry is really impressive . One would compare it to the Minotaurus' maze in Crete.

The quarry now dubbed "Carrières de Lumière " the Quarry of Light", hosts yearly immersive art exhibitions with images projected on the walls and a fantastic music sound system. This year the theme is Picasso and the Spanish masters. One is truly immersed in a very special environment ! Follows a few shots with MP240 at 3200 ISO- yes you may see some banding- and Elmarit 24mm.

Finally,... pictures of Picasso by Lucien Clergue were exhibited on the courtyard of the Chateau des Baux.

Thanks for looking.

Very good series on Picasso. The projection of his Guernica painting on the quarry walls is especially well done with the silhouettes of the spectators.

We expect you'll soon be off to Tahiti and the Marquesas to follow the trail of Paul Gauguin. Sent photos!

You could not guess better as were there in 2014, traveling with a cargo from Tahiti to the Marquesas and back. Thanks a lot give me a good motivation to re-visit the Gaugin part of the trip and post a few shots I had from Marquesas. Separate thread coming...

Bravo! Great series, good photos of the projections in difficult light situation.

I was a Les Baux a few years ago and the show are really impressive.

I can only imagine how much emotion the Picasso's can transmit!
