I got some R lenses to use on the SL as they are very reasonably-priced compared with M equivalents.  Then I was curious about how they would perform on film and after some research decided that the R5 looked to be a good choice:  much smaller than the R8 or R9 with several options for metering.  Also available at reasonable prices.  If you are really worried about being dependent on electronics, then the R6 or R6.2 is a purely-mechanical option (if the internal meter fails, take a hand-held meter or rely on "sunny 16").

The only other options I could see for using R lenses with film were adapt to a film M (rely on zone focusing) or "leitax" to a different mount e.g. Nikon F.  I am still trying to work out if the latter is helpful as it relies on stop-down metering and focusing but at least the focus turns in the "correct" direction and there is a benefit (if using an F or F2) of a titanium shutter that never seems to wear out.

John,

I already have an SL2 Leicaflex, R4-MOT, R8 and R9, all in excellent fully working condition, so I am well looked after in the Leica reflex department.

R5 - good choice! ;)  Thoroughly enjoy using mine (with 35, 60(Macro) & 90 Elmarits + 21-35mm Vario)

Scottish Highlander in Dutch dunes. APO Telyt 280/4.0 handheld with SL. Of course it would have been sharper on tripod, but I find it still unbelievable how well it draws handheld with 1/640".
