I keep toying with the idea of a DMR, but then decide I am not enough of a gambler to take a chance on a camera attachment, which could die tomorrow. The same with an M6TTL, where a failed capacitor or corroded circuit track could change it into an M4 with half the value. The R8 and R9 are the same but they are now so cheap, that I was prepared to take the risk.

Dear wlaidlaw,

So far I have been very, very lucky with these older Leica R bodies (R7, R8, R9) and now with the DMR. One day they will fail and will be display pieces.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Even a "very modern" high end digital cameras, like a Sony A7, may be too expensive to repair, if it fails.

I am not suggesting that anyone take a chance and make the gamble, ... it is risky.

Cheers!

Light was nice and soft on our walk yesterday and some buds were just giving a peek at what was to come, so grabbed the 100/2.8 APO and got a few shots of a star magnolia and a forsythia.  both are 4 shot stacked images for increased DOF to still retain a soft background.

Spring may actually be on the way.

The Leitz R 60/2.8 Elmarit I ordered from the Ukraine last week has just arrived!

As I type, the first roll of film (colour) Fuji 100 put through it to my R8 is developing. The lens is in 'mint' condition. I am very pleased, subject to seeing the first images it produces.

I got some R lenses to use on the SL as they are very reasonably-priced compared with M equivalents.  Then I was curious about how they would perform on film and after some research decided that the R5 looked to be a good choice:  much smaller than the R8 or R9 with several options for metering.  Also available at reasonable prices.  If you are really worried about being dependent on electronics, then the R6 or R6.2 is a purely-mechanical option (if the internal meter fails, take a hand-held meter or rely on "sunny 16").

The only other options I could see for using R lenses with film were adapt to a film M (rely on zone focusing) or "leitax" to a different mount e.g. Nikon F.  I am still trying to work out if the latter is helpful as it relies on stop-down metering and focusing but at least the focus turns in the "correct" direction and there is a benefit (if using an F or F2) of a titanium shutter that never seems to wear out.
