How to upload images: Prepare the image as follows: 1.   The image should be sRGB and 8-bits 2.   Reduce the size to 2480 pixels on the longest side. (smaller sizes can be set, but are not recommended) 3.   Sharpen properly for screen. 4.   Save as JPG to your desktop, reducing JPG quality to produce 2000 kB (5000 kB for sponsoring members). 5.   In Lightroom these parameters should be set in the Export dialog. 6.   In the Forum posting or editing box, click “c

Simple portrait.

APO Elmarit R 180mm mk 1, Leitax converted to Nikon F mount and shot with Nikon D700 at ISO 6400.  Some noise in the shadows can be seen, it is after all 2007 sensor technology.

On my screen the skin shows some blue pixel... may be the screen isn't well calibrated, however it is a very well focussed, IMHO on right eye.  Nice shot!

Nothing wrong with your screen.

High ISO and it shows in the shadows as coloured pixels, an old picture taken with old camera, recent find going through the archive.

I usually go for long tonal scales and subdued color palettes, but I made this exposure — it just called to me for a harder-edged, more explosive rendering technique. So I remembered the Kodalith images done in the 1970s and thought, I wonder if it might work...

Thanks, do you need RAW file to do that or it it will work with JPG?

At the time I took the picture my home computer was only 130Gb Hard Drive so I was memory frugal.

Better with RAW file (possible with Jpeg but never tried (only HQ not Prime), impossible with Tiff file)...😎

One more from this afternoon's walk, same setup as above.  A bit short though it may be, I think my 280mm f/4 will be seeing more use without the teleconverters whenever the scene permits . . .

It was about a year ago that I first read somewhere that Peter Karbe advocated cropping over use of a teleconverter.  

That took me back to several years before when I acquired my first copy of the 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R.  I had come to realize that using either APO extender with the lens diminished some of its magic. But 280mm was shorter than I preferred to use for chasing birds.  So I set about trying different, cameras in an attempt to give the lens more reach, no less than eighteen over the next few years, everything from a Canon 7D II to a Lumix GX8.  Unfortunately, the only cameras with which the lens retained its magic were the M240 and the SL.  Coming to believe that longer glass was the answer, not megapixels, I got distracted by the new, economical superzooms and sold off the 280.

A few months ago I couldn't resist picking up another copy, one that had spent part of its life in a Leica showroom.  Still believing in the notion of longer glass, I always used it with one of the extenders attached. But pixel-peeping forced me to acknowledge two things:  1) that there was some slight deterioration of IQ with an extender attached; and 2) that there was also some deterioration in my handheld shooting skills.

Not long after I added an SL2 to the arsenal, I again ran across a quote attributed to Mr. Karbe:  "An optical extender would be less good than a digital crop today. So, actually, we don't need it anymore."  So with a teleconverter still in my bag, but, for the first time in ages, not attached to camera and lens, I set out these past two days to see what kind of images I could get with the bare 280mm f/4, a shorter lens, but a slightly lighter one that retains its magic, with the added benefit of faster shutter speeds.

What you wrote about APO-Extenders versus cropping is fascinating, Rob, (and used to be counter-intuitive).  May I ask by how much you cropped your excellent Bulbul image please?
