SL/280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R/APO-Extender-R 1.4X . . .

A branch on a tree overhanging a small pond--today.  By Friday, I hope it will be claimed for a fourth "winter" by a tiny Common Kingfisher as his favorite perch from which to dive for fish. 🙂  It will be remarkable if it happens, as only about half of these diminutive critters survive two or more migrations seasons.

How did you manage to avoid the donut bokeh? I can live with it with my 500 MR-Telyt but I would prefer to avoid it if I could. I have found that using a gaussian blur brush in Photoshop can smooth it out to some extent. Is that a regular or APO 2X extender? I have the 2X APO but I am thinking of getting a 1.4X APO as well, to avoid the 2 EVO light reduction.

There is a large magnification in the pictures, because of the extender and the APS camera. The dog  fills the complete area more or less, almost no unsharp background. There is some busy bokeh, but the light colored dog takes the attention.

The flower picture has the black background, no bokeh donuts there.

The lens had a bad press. One can let the donuts shine by choosing an appropriate scene. There are examples. Those reviewers were termed by somebody as members of the hate brigade.

I have the APO-extender 2X.

Can the 1.4X APO extender be used with the 500 MR-Telyt? I suspect looking at the protrusion of the front element of the 1.4X extender, I fear not. I think it may be limited to use with the 280 and 400mm refractor lenses and cannot even be used with my 80-200/f4 Vario Elmar-R. I don't have either the 280 or 400 Telyts.

I had looked at the wiki but the supported lens list for the 2X extender doesn't show the 500 MR-Telyt which as we both know, works just fine. However, given the large "nose" on the 1.4X extender, it looks as if it can only be used with lenses that don't have any elements near the mount, which would exclude both the 500 MR and 80-200.
