Had a stroll around Cirencester on Tues afternoon with R5, 21-35mm Vario Elmar-R and a roll of Tri-X. First one from the roll - part of the frontage of the Church of St John Baptist in the town centre.

I wasn't happy with the contrast I was getting from my 280 APO-Telyt + APO 2X, so I sourced another APO 2X . . .

The bad news is that the first teleconverter wasn't the problem.  Same as the 180 APO-Elmarit, this lens begs to be stopped down one stop when used with a TC. Unlike the 180, it doesn't deliver enough contrast for satisfactory feather detail even though the sharpness is there.  This lens is at its best (and only acceptable configuration) at f/4, without a TC, on the CL, neither ergonomic nor long enough to be useful on APS-C.

SL with 280mm f/2.8 APO-Telyt-R + APO-Extender-R 2X . . .

Rob,

Apologies for what might seem to be a daft question but I assume that you have, and are using, the slot-in filter on your 280/4 APO-Telyt-R are you?

Pete.

Hi Pete,

Not a daft question at all!  In fact, this 280/2.8 is missing the drop-in Series 5.5 ND 1X filter.  That could very well explain some of the performance dip.

When I had the 280/4, I tested it extensively both with and without the ND filter, and didn't see any difference.  As explained in a couple of older threads here, the problem I had with that lens was likely due to sensor reflection; and I ditched the lens some time ago.

However, the 280/2.8 does not seem to have any issue with sensor reflection.  A beat-up copy of the the 280/2.8 that I previously owned and sold off some years ago rendered with plenty of contrast wide open.  It could very well be that my current copy's missing drop-in filter contributes to the loss of contrast at f/2.8.  I'll find a copy of the filter somewhere and give the lens another go.

Many thanks for pointing the way to a possible solution!

Hi, Rob,

Ah so it's the f/2.8, not the f/4.  I recall having a discussion with a very learned gentleman some time ago who told me that the drop-in filter is part of the lens's computation in response to my asking whether in my 280/4 I could swap it for a 81-series warming filter.

I assume it's the same for the 280/2.8 so I can't understand why Leica's designers would add a ND filter when they've spent effort designing a fast telephoto to only 'throttle it back' with a ND.  Are you certain that it should be a ND 1x rather than a bespoke Leica filter?

Pete.

Pete,

The APO-Telyt website says Leica #13026.  This is the same filter used in the f/4 lens.  According to what I've read, the filter has no effect on the amount of light passing through it.  But, same as the E112 filter on the front of the lens (also ND 1X), it is part of the optical formula.

CL with Vario-Elmar-R 80-200mm f/4 + APO-Extender-R 2X . . .

I've seen a few telephoto zooms that take 1.4x teleconverters well, but never one that takes a 2X well--except this lens.

No discernible degradation or loss of sharpness, even on 24mp crop sensor, even with the subject strongly backlit . . . I wish I could display here the details that are in the original . . .
