rnl Posted June 27, 2018 Share #1 Posted June 27, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) I lost it again. It's hiding somewhere on the back carpet in my 911 and I can't find it again. It just does not stay on. Does anyone have a substitute for this @#%#@#! hood cap? Notwithstanding this cheap, poorly designed and terrible hood cover, the lens is great! I never use lens cap while shooting. Hood gives enough protection. Any cap will come off with a bump unless it is a screw in kind. But I agree that 35fle’s rubber hood cap is useless and a cheap design. If you have lost it then why bother. If you store it in its own compartment in your camera bag then it will be fine without the cap.
lct Posted June 27, 2018 Share #3 Posted June 27, 2018 All Leica rubber hood caps i have are more or less like that. Only solutions change the carpet of your Porsche, buy a Ferrari car with red carpet to match the red dot or keep the cap in your bag or a drawer. JAC Posted June 27, 2018 Share #5 Posted June 27, 2018 I just take my lens cap off in the morning and put it on when done shooting for the day. I agree it doesn't have an extremely secure attachment.
CharlesL Posted June 27, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 27, 2018 Wrap gaffer tape around the rim for a snug fit.
Abram Posted June 28, 2018 Share #7 Posted June 28, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Honestly I leave the cap in my bag when I'm shooting with the lens as I know it's prone to fall off. I do use a B+W filter though so I don't mind leaving the cap off until I'm done shooting for the day.

Does anyone have a substitute for this @#%#@#! hood cap? Notwithstanding this cheap, poorly designed and terrible hood cover, the lens is great!Until recently I’ve been saved by my children who gathered my hood-caps behind me in our tracks. Since my children live on their own however, I lost my 24Elmarit hood, still have to order it. I also have such a rubber cap, with a slightly different design, for my summicron 35 iv. I never use it because I already lost it two times. So, very functional caps indeed! As they say: form follows function (I even guess this design principle stems from the German school Bauhaus). Just too bad that the function reaches no further than owning it. And, just like boxes: it sells better when you don’t want it anymore, but this occurs very seldom with Leica lenses. colint544 Posted June 28, 2018 Share #9 Posted June 28, 2018 Lost mine somewhere in Edinburgh Waverley station within the first month of buying the lens. It just never wanted to be on the lens.
Gobert Posted June 28, 2018 Share #10 Posted June 28, 2018 I always thought that the sporty versions of the 911’s don’t have back seats in order to make it more easy to find back missings lens caps.
Bill W Posted June 28, 2018 Share #11 Posted June 28, 2018 If you can afford the Porsche, buy a dozen hood caps as spares. A lot of comedians on the forum. Oh and I wish I had a Porsche....!

indergaard Posted June 28, 2018 Share #13 Posted June 28, 2018 Can I buy your 911? I need one of those lens caps, as they tend to go missing all the time.
Gobert Posted June 28, 2018 Share #14 Posted June 28, 2018 Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz ?My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qev-i9-VKlY 12 years ago or so my wife needed a new car. So I decided to buy her a classic 993 S. Aircooled and with the beautiful wide body. However, she decided she wanted a SLK 350. 5 or 6 years later the Mercedes had a write off of 50%, while the 993 has increased value with the same percentage. Nowadays she’s driving a Fiat 500. rnl Posted June 28, 2018 Author Share #15 Posted June 28, 2018 Well you asked for it...here it is. As you can see the photo was taken before the hood was irretrievably lost in the carpet. Peter Kilmister Posted June 28, 2018 Share #18 Posted June 28, 2018 To put this back on topic, I thought I had lost a 35mm lens hood so I bought a replacement. Then I discovered the original hiding away in my bag. If anyone wants a replacement they can have it if they pay the postage and contribute £10 to a charity of my choice ... probably Amnesty International, plus a £10 payment to LUF to keep this marvellous forum going. £20 plus postage is about what I paid for it so consider yourself lucky if you accept. For EU residents there is no customs charge and payment may be made in Euros. For users outside the EU there may be customs charges, however on a cheap item this is unlikely. Payment is accepted in any major currency via PayPal. I hope this an acceptable offer to LUF and won't go against their policies as they can benefit.
