THE 2018 NYC LGBT Pride Parade gallery - captured the old fashioned way

This past Sunday was the 49th annual PRIDE parade in New York City.  It's my most favorite parade of the year.  Such a free spirited assembly of expressive people.  I couldn't decide which film to take so I took three cameras:

M-A and 50mm lux for street portraits from which I shot a roll of Portra 160 and a roll of Ektar

M3 and 28mm elmarit pre-asph v4 for fast moving candids, from which I shot 4 rolls of Portra 400 @800

IIIg and 50mm elmar for some of each, from which I shot 2 rolls of the rare and extraordinary Adox Color Implosion film

The color palettes and richness of film were perfect for the parade.

This is, however, how silly I looked:  :D

Few public exhibitions are as flambouyant, colorful and borderline outrageous as are the celebrations of sexual diversity in the big East Coast cities of NYC, Philly and DC.

The only criticism I make of these shots is they are too many static snapshots of people in candid pose, but without evidence of the energy and movement that I know from personal experience are a huge part of these parades. To that end, the pictures that speak to me most are those you've taken of people hugging, kissing, marching . . . of people living out loud.

Perhaps next time focus on people orating, carrying signs and banners, pointing, laughing, shouting. . . in short, doing the things that people relieved of shame and of inhibition are going to do.

Thanks, Allan.  These photos are from the two rolls that I took with my 50mm lux pretty much wide open which I used exclusively for isolated street portraits.  I shot 7 rolls of candids, although not necessarily with a strict reportage purpose in mind, as you have suggested.   I will be sharing more environmental type photos in due course, and hope that you will enjoy them.  But please don't expect any shots of people jumping up and down cheering the parade, and/or holding the various signs.  That's just not my thing.  I often see series on this forum of parades and protests that focus much more on these types of things.  I generally find them boring, myself, especially the photos of all of the signs.  Horses for courses, I guess.

Bookmark this page and keep up with the feed; the cohesiveness and feeling that you are there will only grow by the day :)
