Einst_Stein Posted June 23, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted June 23, 2018 (edited) Many SL users dislike half case due to the same issue you pointed out. There seems no better solution to protect the camera body. RRS has an L plate that works as a rotatable tripod mount and half protection. It does not increase the feeling of the size, But the protection only covers the bottom and the left side. Overall a leather case has much better protection coverage, including impact absorption. I happen to shoot to hold my camera mainly with the left hand, grabing the lens, so the right hand feeling is not critical. Black seems to be a safer color, but this one has a tempting beautiful look. Anyone has a happy story with SL case like this or similar? Jeff S Posted June 23, 2018 Share #5 Posted June 23, 2018 Protect the camera from what? It’s a weather sealed tank. One person’s beautiful is another person’s ugly. Whatever works. Jeff
Donzo98 Posted June 23, 2018 Share #6 Posted June 23, 2018 I don't like any case that doesn't allow access to battery and SD card. I have an RRS bottom plate on mine, that's all.

Einst_Stein Posted June 23, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted June 23, 2018 I don't like any case that doesn't allow access to battery and SD card. I have an RRS bottom plate on mine, that's all. I also have a L-plate of another brand fort another camera. It can also access the SD and battery. But I never find it's necessary or useful. Modern digital camera and battery usually good enough to last a full day's work. and I rarely run out of the SD. YMMV. Most people's concern on this is usually psychological. frame-it Posted June 24, 2018 Share #10 Posted June 24, 2018 (edited) but with the huge SL lenses, wont the lens hit first /get damaged badly if the camera is falling ? Edited June 24, 2018 by frame-it
ropo54 Posted June 24, 2018 Share #11 Posted June 24, 2018 I have a case for my Leica SL. I had thought to use it to protect the body. Frankly, for me it makes the SL too thick to hold and I do not use it when taking photos.
Einst_Stein Posted June 24, 2018 Author Share #12 Posted June 24, 2018 (edited) I have a case for my Leica SL. I had thought to use it to protect the body. Frankly, for me it makes the SL too thick to hold and I do not use it when taking photos. If so, do you think using RRS L plate a better solution? At least it can somewhat protect the bottom and the left side, not increase the grip size, and rotate to vertical on tripod. Mr.Q Posted June 24, 2018 Share #13 Posted June 24, 2018 The SL's grip is a bit too thick naked. I can't imagine putting a case on it.

I suppose a plate would not change that and would provide a measure of protection. Rob
Bill W Posted June 24, 2018 Share #16 Posted June 24, 2018 Wish the SL had the same grip as the X1D. Even Leica admits it is sort of a brick.

Jeff S Posted June 24, 2018 Share #18 Posted June 24, 2018 Kaufmann called the design somewhat ‘brutal’, ‘like with an axe’ and that the next version would be a bit more ‘elegant’. But that’s also when he said we’d realize some new potential in the L mount in June, 2018. Better hurry. Jeff

Insurance helps, too. Do you wrap your lens in a case, too, when shooting? Or your body? Jeff I have ruber lens shade. Your age and years of photography has nothing to do with this question. Leica has offers of camera case for protection, so does many camera case vendor. Some of them have hundred years of making and selling camera or camera cases. I dont think you could be smarter. The question is not about camera case or not, it is about which is better for this particular camera. Einst_Stein Posted June 24, 2018 Author Share #20 Posted June 24, 2018 but with the huge SL lenses, wont the lens hit first /get damaged badly if the camera is falling ? If you always had your lens hit instead of body, too bad. No M mount lenses is huge, but I use ruber lens shade anyway, including 21mm, which has the ruber pulled back, essentially minimum shade mainly for impact absorption.
