I just added a rider to my homeowners policy includes accidental damage and theft 110USD / year with no deductible. I just examined my policy again. I pay slightly less than $100 / yr. for full replacement value coverage. Worldwide. Lost or stolen, broken or damaged, no deductible. Here in the UK I've added my Q for a similar worldwide replacement coverage of loss, theft, damage for about £150 or so annually. I did it through these people who have been very helpful and specialise in photographers. What if something like this were to happen to my out of warranty Q (my warranty just expired in july of this year)? Do I trade it in while it is still working/ before anything happens to it? What are the risks and benefits? Unless I went full analog (which is not going to happen anytime soon) there risks for all digital equipment. (analog equipment have their own risks-- water damage among them). It is not surprising that a repair to the lens would be costly. I imagine if you had a CL or SL and one of those lenses acted similarly for a similar reason -- the repair cost might be as much or more. Quality costs. But it is not a repair of the lens. Because they have designed it so that you can not change the aperture ring, but have to change the entire lens. If it's a quality thing, I'd let it be up to others to judge! Many times they don't even abide the EU customer law, saying damage was induced due to knocks to the body etc (even when there is no visible damage.) They can not give me any price reduction. but they have given me the opportunity to choose leather from their A la carde program at no additional cost. Henrik So Update, after 4 weeks in shop, I contacted Leica for an status update. The leather solution they offered is a little problem, because they first expect to get the leather in stock, in 4 weeks. (from now so 8 weeks +) They offer me that I can get it mount with the standard leather, and then I can get it fitted with the promised at another time. ajayk Posted August 22, 2018 Share #49 Posted August 22, 2018 That reflects very poorly on Leica. My Nikon D750 once developed a problem with shutter as I had mounted a old lens. It was out of warranty but Nikon was caring enough to repair it free of cost. Recently I banged my Canon 5Dsr on a car door accidentally. Damage was extensive as body broke and Sigma Art lens caved in. Both were out if warranty but I got both of them repaired from respective companies in $100. Canon rather changed the body cover only and now its absolutely new. What is happening to Leica I wonder. I think its a German problem. My brand new Audi’s tyre got torn in 2 weeks time and Audi insisted that I pay for a new tyre. Dragged them to a consumer court here and they settled and agreed to change it for free. If it happens to me will certainly drag Leica too to court. Judge was very understanding and told the counsel for Audi that when you are charging a premium price for your product then cant put sub standard material or use substandard technology or service. I though am lucky to have few independent camera repair shops around who are experts at repairing all kind of lenses and bodies at low cost provided they can source the spare parts, if required. Once only they required a spare part for my old canon which they asked me to source and I got it cheap from a Chinese manufacturer who promptly shipped it to me. All it costed was $25.
