Good morning to all the One Challengers - past, present and future.

This year's One Challenge (the 15th in Europe!) is being held in Lyon, France, at noon on Saturday 13th October, and this the start of the thread that grows over the coming months.

Everyone is welcome!

I am very pleased to say that Christoph, Veronique and Philippe have kindly done a lot of work in organising the Challenge this year and their local knowledge has been put to very good use. They will be along later with the details for venues for the lunch and dinner (I will open a separate thread for that in due course), so I am very grateful for that help.

We look forward to seeing fellow forum members for what I believe is one of the highlights of the forum year.

(Flights and accommodation already booked here)

A bientôt!

66 Euros according to the Michelin route planner.

Which could be either £70 by then or £33; all depending which currency falls fastest.

I may drive or come by train - undecided yet. My accommodation is booked - Hotel Royal Lyon I think (a sofitel probably).

Not staying in Marseille after all, Ravi?

As promised above, I am delighted to say that Christoph and Veronique have put together a Guide to Lyon, with some ideas about restaurants, hotels, trips etc. The only thing that needs to be sorted is the lunchtime meeting venue.

It's too large to attach as a PDF here, so I have placed it into a Dropbox, from where it can be downloaded.

It looks like it's going to be a good weekend!

Thanks to Christoph and Veronique for the guide. I think it's a very good introduction to Lyon.

I'll be staying with friends who live almost next door to the Mercure Lumiere hotel mentioned in the guide. There's a metro station (San-Souci) a minute's walk from the hotel and it's a short journey into the centre. There's a very good restaurant - Restaurant Marguerite - very close to the hotel (no I don't have shares in the Accor hotel chain), I've had several excellent lunches there.

One other thing, there's a funicular railway that goes from the old town to the top of the hill behind the old cathedral - that might save the legs.

Finally, anyone driving to Lyon will need a Crit Air sticker for the car. Details here...

https://www.certificat-air.gouv.fr/en/

Cost is around 4 Euros to the UK, and as part of the process you'll need to upload a scan of your registration document. There are other sites offering to get you one for 30 Euros, they're rip off merchants.

I saw one of my Lyonaise friends last week and he knew nothing about the certificate, though they don't use their car much. Although it's a France wide scheme I didn't see a single car with one apart from mine.

I've no intention of driving, Steve, but for information do you happen to know what happens if one's car doesn't wear the sticker:

- crushed on the spot?

- a moderate fine?

- a ridiculous fine?

- the owner held up by the ears so passers-by can pelt him with rotten tomatoes?

- jeered at by locals?

- nothing?

Fines of between 68-135 Euros, I don't know if they're on the spot or not.

More details here...

Calais to Lyon is drivable in a day, though it's a full day of driving and I'd spend the night before on the French side of the channel to ensure an early start.

This and last year I spent many times in Paris, Marseille, Lyon (even when trying to avoid), without a sticker and have not been fined. My understanding is that they go easy on tourist.

Depends of the brand of the car: for an English sport car it's confiscation :o .

Thanks for the information Steve. I've driven to Paris a couple of times this year, plus going through France to get to other European cities and never realised such a thing existed. For 4 Euros I'll probably get one so that I'm at least legal on one thing; I never bother with the head light deflectors and my breathalyzers must be years out of date.   ;)

Cheers, Tom

Same here. Eventually you get used to French drivers swerving into ditches at night.

The sticker for non-electric cars has a category from A to E depending on how polluting the engine is. I was surprised to see that a VW Passat was a 'C', of course it's possible they took VW's emission figures on trust.
