schattenundlicht Posted September 6, 2018 Share #42 Posted September 6, 2018 (edited) I have a hard enough time getting an in-focus shot using [...]the 90mm f2 wide open. I can only imagine the needed precision for f1.25. [...] For a typical portrait/ street situation, DOF of 75@1.25 will be effectively the same as of 90@2.0.* Welcome, dear visitor! Chaemono Posted September 7, 2018 Share #43 Posted September 7, 2018 (edited) While waiting to shoot a fashion show, these two gentlemen approached a fellow photographer and me and asked us to take their picture. The gentleman on the right gave us his card. He is an actor by the name of Wolfgang Schloesser. Less compressed JPEGs here: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-N64xjs/ Welcome, dear visitor! Chaemono Posted September 7, 2018 Share #46 Posted September 7, 2018 They used this terrible yellow light on the catwalk which created a solarization effect as the models approached. Not all skin tones took it well. The effect was more pronounced in the evening. Less compressed JPEGs here: https://www.smugmug.com/gallery/n-N64xjs/ Welcome, dear visitor! Chaemono Posted September 8, 2018 Share #50 Posted September 8, 2018 Let's face it, this was the wrong tool for the job. Actually, it wasn't a job at all. I just happened to run into the fashion show last night. I went back today with the SL and the APO 90 Summicron-SL. I posted the pictures here: https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/287664-sl-50-lux-75-cron-or-twiddle-thumbs-for-sl-50-cron/page-
Eesand Posted October 20, 2018 Share #51 Posted October 20, 2018 75 Noctilux wide open.. for me, using the range finder wide open just won't nail it especially close in on my m10. Also note that at long distances the r/f is inaccurate, in between distance wise it can work fine. (saw this on two different bodies). I highly recommend using live view as a double check or fine tune, or better yet, an evf. The latter works great. Welcome, dear visitor! mikeamosau Posted October 23, 2018 Share #52 Posted October 23, 2018 I’ve found the opposite Eesand using the 75 Noctilux. I’ve used this lens now on both the M10 and M240 and have had no trouble nailing focus wide open. I’ve also not seen any issues with infinity focusing. I was actually surprised how good my focus keeper rate was, this lens for me is amazing. Now I just wish it was half the weight... my arms hurt! Or probably my own body - vision.. it is so close. Did another experiment 90 Cron wide open has similar dof as 75 open. I get same issue, I won’t detail the experiment, but same result on more than one camera. 50 Noctilux is more forgiving than these two open, it has a little more dof open. For me anything above 50, the evf helps me nail it every time.

In this case instead of a little bit off, it’s a lot causing distant subjects to be out of focus if one relies solely on the r/f. Also, the overall inaccuracy occurs at shorter distance at above 50mm lenses. Thanks for verifying what I see in well aligned systems.

I have no issue shooting far away objects with open apertures with the RF at all. On distance the RF doesn´t have to be that precise since the DOF extends the further away your subject is.
