Correction lens holder for IIIg

Recommended Posts

It appears the Leica made "correction lens holders" for the LTM cameras (later ones ie IIIf & g - holder enabled you to put correction lenses over the rangefinder & viewfinder windows) - I can't seem to find any pics (or codes etc) or ones for sale online & there is no mention in Laney either (I havn't been able to find anything).

A thread from 2008 mentions this (see below). It's semi-mentioned in the IIIg manual.

Ray, I wear glasses, too. What I have done to solve the viewfinder problem is to get hold of an original correction lens holder for the IIIg. I then had my optician install the appropriate correction lens into the holder, and that works very fine. The original holder covers both the rangefinder and the viewfinder entrance windows at the back of the camera.

Cheers,

Andy

Andy,

Have a look at page 19 of Dennis Laney's Leica Accessory Guide (Downloadable as PDF from www.butkus.org - contributions requested) it gives an extensive table of all the accessory diopter and astigmatism correction devices, lenses and lens holders. Hove/Steyning Photo Books used to have originals of the Accessory guide but they seem to have run out.

PS There was a copy for sale on eBay UK but I have just bought that as my elderly and very tatty first edition has half the pages missing.

My father had some sort of diopter lens holder (maybe an ORTUX) on the rangefinder of his IIIa with the strongest minus diopter lens he could get in it as his left eye was very shortsighted after measles as a child. He found it quite useful in his business of textiles, as he could examine the quality and weave of cloth in perfect focus at just over an inch from his eye. People used to think he was checking that the cloth smelt correct. His right eye was much better for use on the viewfinder, with no correction needed.

PS There was a Leica OKBZO sold recently at a The SaleRoom Auction in the UK. I think it went for around £40-50 from memory.

I have some for IIc/IIf and IIIc/IIIf and some also for IIIg but not for sale.

The ORTUX is the older

So it looks (from what I can see with the "ORTUX" image above) like the holder clips over the complete Rangefinder & Viewfinder eyepiece unit and one piece of glass covers both windows/eyepieces?

Is that correct?

OKBZO was the holder for the IIIg or does that refer to the glass/lens only?

I wasn't looking to buy but was just interested in how the mechanism functions & fits over/attaches to the eyepieces

Any pics would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the info so far

Very groovy!! as I thought - was the corrected glass/optics already part of the unit or did that have to be fitted by an optician once your optical formula was determined?

Was this attachment called OKBZO?

What was the situation for models prior to the IIIb where the eyepieces were some distance apart?

As indicated in my post from 2008 (Jesus, that is already 10 years ago), the unit could be bought separately (I do not know whether Leitz also sold units including the required lens) and your optician could make and install the required correction lens.

Just a guess, but if Leitz installed the glass they may have marked the correctiom value on on the mount, such as these later units for the reflex.  If the glass was installed by a local optician, then it is likely unmarked as to the correcton value.

Extact from the leica accesory guide :

So these codes must refer to the glass (+/- attachment) rather than the attachment per se eg. for the IIIg we have OKBZO (14064): near or long sighted vs OKVCO (14066): Astigmatism - why have two different codes for the same attachment device? Must be referring to the glass.

It doesn't appear that the slip on attachment by itself (without glass) had a separate code.

Alan would you be able to take pics of the IIIg attachment & the IIIb-IIIf version side by side (if you have both).

Thanks all for the input

The III and IIIa had an adjustable diopter built into the rangefinder, somebody else may know of an attachment available for the viewfinder.
