Camera Baseplate retain/lock broke

Hi guys,

I'm a happy owner of an MD, a camera that helped renew my passion for photography. My camera goes with me everyday and everywhere.

Yesterday though the camera baseplate failed to lock. A small metal piece came apart from the retain mechanism of the camera. Its a small retain part that prevents the baseplate to move off the camera. As the broken part is from the camera and not the baseplate, I was told that the camera needs to travel to Leica... Meaning some weeks without my only camera   .

It is a small part that seems to be easy to be replaced by the technical service at my local Leica dealer (Barcelona). But they say that Leica does not send the parts.

Question:

Any experience in which you managed Leica to provide parts (to me or to the Leica local rep)

Any other supplier of parts?

Camera works perfectly securing the baseplate with some tape. So I could use it until getting the parts and it could be fixed in an hour here. I just dont want my camera to be away for weeks.

Thank you!!

Jaime

Is this a Leica store or just a dealer? If I were you I would call Leica Customer Service in Wetzlar. Ask for Mrs.Frankl . However, how did this part manage to get detached? That is quite uncommon. Might there be a problem with the screw threads? In that case it might need a replacement of the body shell. I can quite imagine Leica wishing to determine the cause and evaluate the problem.

A guy on Ebay in USA is currently selling a base-plate in new condition from an M 240. It's 275$ with a Best Offer option.

Leica will likely take a month or more to get it back to you. It's an option. In life, if you throw enough money at a problem, it goes away.
