Dear friends,  Im Alberto from Spain

Two months ago I fulfilled my dream set  M10+Summilux black chrome. After so many time waiting and saving my expectations were very high.

- Several times the m10 crashes and blocks in the middle of a photoshoot. It happens sometimes whike i,m shooting and everything is going ok but suddenly i see in the visor “SD” message, and it blocks, and you can not do anything with the camera, it doesnt react. Then i take out sd card, also take out battery, shoot turn on and off with and without the sd card and different sd card but it doesnt react. Just until i do this procedure randomly 10 or more times and then it turns normal. Im using sd formated in the camera, sandisk ultra 32 gb 80mb, also different sandisk cards and last firmware update 1.10.4.0

-The camera firstly didn,t  recognise the summilux 50 f1.4 black chrome asph. I put auto lens recognition and also tried the manual one, but this lens doesnt appear in the list I tried the most similar one in the list wich is the summilux 1.4 asph (not black chrome) but didnt work and the framing frames were not the correct ones from a 50 lens

After several times putting on and off the lux to the camera and turn on and of the camera finally it recognised it, but im not 100% sure its everything ok

--Summilux apperture ring is overall too soft and at maximum apperture 1.4 has some little game at the end that im not sure  it,s normal. I also sent the black chrome hood to Leica in order to modificate because I cannot use the filter with the hood attached. 3 weeks ago and still waiting. They didn't, offered pick up service

Overall unhappy with my purchase, also with Leica service,  I'm not very fussy with my equipment but in this case I feel not lucky, and not what I expected about Leica quality and reliability

Did you try a different battery, different brand/spec SD card or contact your dealer to discuss exchange?

Loose aperture rings are unfortunately the norm these days, it seems. Easy fix, though, from Leica or good third party. You or dealer should inspect next time and insist on good sample.

Alberto from Spain,

This year, I had a similar problem with my M10. I sent it back to Leica through the Leica dealer were I purchased the camera. After a few weeks, Leica told the dealer to refund my money because the camera was not repairable.

Welcome to Forum and the world of Leica ownership. The "Black Chrome' and regular Summilux are identical optically. When you mount a lens make sure you hear a clear "click" to know it is properly located so the coding bars align correctly. Also, if the lens is not fully located the correct frame lines will not show. All Leica M's seem sensitive to speed/capacity of SD card - a little research will tell you what works well.

What kind of warranty is that? How strange that Leica itself did not offer a replacement.

Hi. I just received my M10 (also bought as a Demo). It feels good, works well und there aren’t any problems. Really sorry to hear your complaints. Yes, would also contact the dealer .... and do not get frustrated. It is an exceptional camera and a pleasure to use it for shooting. Really enjoy it!

Best wishes!

Use another brand of SD card

Take your finger off the lens release button when you mount the lens, the clue is in the name, it's for releasing the lens not for mounting it.

First I welcome you too this Forum. Sorry other about your frustration and problems. I can tell you the M10 is a pleasure to use, no doubts.

I had I few occasional problems with some of my old SDS cards in the beginning (not with the 16 or 32 Sand Disk) but since the new firmware they never happened again. I could suggest you to try a different card but probably you already did. Maybe a look at this thread can help you. Check the card's contacts if they are clean, sometimes small things create big problems.

I cannot comment about the lens because I use different Leica lenses.

It happens sometimes Leica Customer Service is not as desired, better as required by such a brand. Did you contact Customer Service in Germany. Strange they didn't answer you, I did a couple of times and got an answer within a couple of days.

Wish you a quick solution for your difficulties.

robert

The "Black Chrome' and regular Summilux are identical optically.

Therefore only one lens profile ... Black Chrome is cosmetic ... and beautiful but the code will register the same for either lens.

I had two M10´s, both with total failures and had to go back to the factory.

For me that was the end of The Mten adventure, and I will stay with my M8.2

John

I am so sorry to hear this I was hoping Leica had gotten their act together. Guess I'll stay with my M8 and M9 both of which have been reworked (for faults) by Leica. I never repeat never had a defective film camera from Leica new or used. This is becoming upsetting. Regards, ron

I'm new on Leica and have experienced around 6 months. Most of the Leica gear I have bought has problems.

Two M10, one has sensor issue (black horizontal lines in high iso when it warms up using LV / EVF) and have frozen few times in 3 months. Second one back focuses and froze 4 times in one day during a wedding gig (just red light is on and needs to take battery off).

APO50: loose aperture ring

Summilux 28: on some light conditions it has severe come / halo on highlights and some flaring (candle lights). Also it "creaks" when lifted up and down from the hood (moves little bit around the aperture ring which doesn't happen on another lenses).

Summilux 21: loose hood (it rotates out of position very easily and compared to Summilux 28 difference is big) and aperture ring "rattles" when rotated.

Summicron 90: dust magnet, I have personally never seen a lens which is so dusty inside the lens in such short time.

M10 seems to have lot of issues, return rate is double digit which is absolutely disaster. Maybe bad batch, but it's not acceptable. I hope all of issues are sorted out in Wetzlar. Don't get me wrong, I just love Leica. The look of the pictures and RF experience has changed my way how I photograph. Really want to ditch my Canon gear and move to Leica.

My personal M10 has been reliable from day one but I am careful about off-brand SD cards and the like, making sure I order them from reputable sources. I'm personally using Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB 95MB/s cards and have had absolutely no issues with them.

I haven't had the greatest experiences with Leica service either (to the effect that I won't use them unless absolutely necessary) but I will counter that and say that many of the Leica stores have exceptional staff that are willing to go above and beyond to help you with issues / concerns.

Some of your concerns are unavoidable unfortunately, with regard to the lens hood and the lens coding. Your lens is no different than the serial version of the 50 Summilux Asph and was a cosmetic variant meant to mimic the earlier 50mm Summilux design, right down to the lens hood. The modern one is more convenient to use with filters. When you sent them your lens hood to modify, did you speak with anyone in advance? Did they give you an estimate on cost or turn around time?

The loose aperture ring is disappointing, I know. But is fixable! My own 35mm Summilux FLE (along with several lenses I've owned in the past) are very very loose but I haven't taken the time to send it in because it's my primary and only lens right now. When I do, I will use a qualified independent repair person (like Don Goldberg) to fix that for me.

I know how you feel though, largely due to the cost, one expects Leica equipment to be 100% perfect, but the reality is that they aren't really all that different from anyone else. That's not to say they have poor quality equipment, it's just that they're made by human beings and human beings can get lazy or make mistakes. Pride in workmanship seems to be a dying art.

For balance, I'm happy to report that I've had no problems at all with my M10 over the many months that I've had it.

To Spice: before going through the effort and pain of returning your M10 to the dealer I recommend reloading the firmware and trying the M10 again.  Sometimes the firmware can corrupt while it is loading and reloading it can put it right.

Pete.

“M10 seems to have lot of issues, return rate is double digit which is absolutely disaster. ”

If you have facts to support this, please share them. If not, you should not be making such unfounded statements.

Seems like the statement is based on anecdotal observations; not sure if challenging it is going to be productive.

My both bodies were manufactured on the same day, I'm talking about the batch which my dealer got and in there failure rate is rather high and I'm not the dealers only customer having problems with the bodies...

I do hope M10's overall statistics are much better.

I'm using Sandisk Extreme Pro cards (64 & 128) and 95 & 300mb/s models. 10+ different samples which some were new and some used before. I was using 1.10.4.0 firmware and my other body was running 1.9.4.0 which was factory installed. I suspect that it has to be component failure as it seems to be related to the LV/EVF (gets stuck only / mostly when using LV/EVF).

I was asked support to send the all items so I'm not sure what they actually do (lenses and the bodies needed calibration so I had to send all the equipment anyway) but let's hope everything gets resolved and I'm having just a bad luck (with the batch).
