didn't think I'd miss it all so much

One of the elements that had to undergo a huge change as a consequence of our move to Idaho is my involvement with vintage racing. To help me get over the virtual loss of this lifelong hands-on hobby, I have been using some evenings of free-time to sort, and revisit the tens of thousands of images I have taken during my 38 years while in California at Laguna Seca, Sears Point, Thunderhill, et al, and enjoy studying, refining and reprocessing images of some of the unforgettable cars I have owned, raced against or simply relished watching.

Leica SL and the remarkable 90-280 V. E. on a RRS Monopod.

A rare, authentic and very fast genuine Porsche 917. This particular car was Pedro Rodriguez's favorite back-up Training car, after he drove it to several important victories.

Ken Miles's famous 'Flying Shingle' - found in a state of disuse and lovingly restored to all its 1950s glory.

Thank you all very much - it will be my great pleasure to keep this thread going with images of some of the great vintage cars I was privileged and fortunate enough to see, drive and crew on over the course of the last forty or so years.

My only request is that everyone who logs on to this thread understand that I'm doing this first and foremost to post pictures of extremely rare, in some cases unimaginably expensive  cars so those who share my passion and enthusiasm for this wonderful hobby, but simply have not had the opportunity to see them, can enjoy them as well, as opposed to trying to dazzle and impress with photographic skills. None of these images are staged or posed in any way, rather think of it as 'automotive street photography'.

Stuart, yes, that's an Aston-Martin, a 1957 DB R2, the second of only two of this model ever made, at the entry to the famous Corkscrew turn at Laguna Seca. Raced by Stirling Moss, Roy Salvadori and many other big names, this car won at Goodwood and Oulten Park.............and all arrangements have been made for Rennsport VI - really looking forward to it.

Two more images of car # 102, a full frontal with the 'bonnet' off, and a few days later on Sunday at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, where the car was warded the 'People's Choice' trophy as the best Aston\-Martin on display.

The '62  Ferrari 250 GTO - 33 produced. If you can find areal one for sale nowadays, be prepared to pay in excess of US $ 50,000000.

Again, Leica SL with the astoundingly good 90-290 V.E. lens

.........and another one. I actually got to ride in this one for three hot laps at Sears Point when I purchased a charity ticket, proceeds of which went to a local children's hospital.

The same owner also owns the '58 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa.

The Ferrari 365 GTB, nicknamed the "Daytona". was the first Ferrari of which more than a 1000 units were produced.

During it's hayday, the factory produced 15 'Competizione' models, in a series of 5 cars each for three consecutive years, some of which were extremely successful.

In the environment of a racetrack, with uncooperative crowds, unperdictable light, the need for variable focal length and fast action, the SLwith it's native, relatively fast auto-focus  zooms has proven to be the ideal set-up............... my favorite Leica body/lens combos.

The rarest of the rare - the only '58 Ferrari 412 MI. chassis # 0744, driven by Mike Hawthorn back in the day- actually powered by the salvaged motor out of Fons de Portago's crashed car. Old Enzo had absolutely no qualms about such things.............no sentimentality there.

Another occasion to sing the praises of the SL and it's wonderful native zooms: I was just aimlessly wandering in the pits at Laguna Seca when I heard the unique scream of the Ferrari's V-12 motor, spun around an got a sharp, 'keeper' image in perfect focus.............don't think I could have pulled that off with my M.

To continue, a highly original  Bugatti Type 37A Grand Prix car, See. # 37265. This model was produced from 1925 to about 1930, 200 of these were made, of which 78 were 'A' types, i.e. a Roots supercharger helping the 1500 cc 4-cylinder make about 80 HP at approx. 5000 rpm. Baron Phillip de Rothschield drove this car to 2nd overall at the '27 LeMans 24 hours.

To me, it's not only the overall automobile that's of intense interest, it's also the details that make some of these memorable treasures icons of innovation, engineering, ingenuity and practical problem-solving. I think the majority of the original owners / buyers of these cars must have felt the same way, because so many more were bought by wealthy individuals to be a regular part of their transportation, as opposed to serving solely as race cars back in their day.

To illustrate the point above, about more of these machines being used as road cars, for example have a look please at the right front wheel, the mechanical brakes and the one-piece cast alloy wheel with integral brake drum.............then remember that this objet d'art is a 91 year old car.
