Kamyar Posted May 21, 2018 Share #1 Posted May 21, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys.I want to buy an ultra wide lens for monochrome and SL type 601 . My budget is limited. I suggest that the M 21mm f1.4 lens buy $ 4,000 (a good field, but now it's expensive for me) and also a 21mm voigtlander. You guide me. Do you suggest another lens? What can I do with my limited budget? Thanks Edited May 21, 2018 by Kamyar

rpittal Posted May 21, 2018 Share #4 Posted May 21, 2018 Kamyar ,the 21 SEM is fantastic if you can use f/3.4; probably the sharpest 21 out there, if that is what you are after.
TomB_tx Posted May 22, 2018 Share #5 Posted May 22, 2018 I don’t use a 21 much, but have been very pleased with the Voigtlander 21 f4.0, on both the M9 and especially the M10. It has slightly colored edges on my M9, but much cleaner on the M10. I especially like its tiny size. The 21 SEM would by tough to beat, and is also nicely small, but too expensive for my little use of a 21. The Voigtlander 21 f1.8 has an excellent reputation and good speed, which is what I would consider if I needed a fast 21. The Voigtlander 21 f4 might have worse colored edges on the SL, but should be fine on the monochrome.
onasj Posted May 22, 2018 Share #6 Posted May 22, 2018 The 21/1.4 is huge, heavy, pricey, and optically not that remarkable at large aperture in my opinion. I suggest the CV 21 or if speed isn’t critical, the 21 SEM or the CV 15.

Kamyar Posted May 22, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted May 22, 2018 What do you think about leica r 24mm f2.8 Rom?
lct Posted May 22, 2018 Share #9 Posted May 22, 2018 What do you think about leica r 24mm f2.8 Rom? It is outperformed by modern M lenses including 24/2.8 asph. One of my least used R lenses i must say.
farnz Posted May 22, 2018 Share #10 Posted May 22, 2018 What do you think about leica r 24mm f2.8 Rom? Generally considered to be one of the lesser R lenses, which is reflected in its price. You might consider the excellent 19/2.8 Elmarit-R v2. The v1 is not quite as good. Pete.

Gregm61 Posted May 22, 2018 Share #12 Posted May 22, 2018 The 24mm f2.8 ASPH-M Elmar may be the sharpest M lens I own.
a.noctilux Posted May 22, 2018 Share #13 Posted May 22, 2018 (edited) What do you think about leica r 24mm f2.8 Rom? Lct wrote that modern M lenses are better than R 24mm lens. ... my opinion: Elmarit-R 24mm... This is old design from Minolta 1974 adopted and adapted to R mount by Leica (with different glass). This older design of 24mm R is outperformed by modern Leica 24mm as Elmar-M 3.8/24 or even older Elmarit-M 2.8/24 Asph. 21mm: I have and use some Zuiko OM 3.5/18mm and 2/21mm soso lenses but usable Super-Angulon 4/21 with border not very good Nikkor 4/21 this is nice on M too My prefered since more than decade and usable on 24M sensor Elmarit-M 2.8/21 Asph. this one is now very affordable and best value for money. g2van Posted May 22, 2018 Share #15 Posted May 22, 2018 For 21mms I have used both the Leica 21/3.4 SEM and the Voigtlander 21/4. The SEM is better for sure - sharper, better contrast all over and has been rated one of the best Leica lenses in those aspects. But I sold it for the Voigt 21/4 (v1 LTM version) simply becos I don't use 21mm very much, mainly for travel, hiking, landscape and those are rare as I shoot more street. For its price Voigt 21/4 is great and it's so small and light - so easy to take along for long hikes. You also went into 24mm. Most people who have the Leica 24/2.8 swear by it. There's also the Zeiss 25/2.8 which is reasonable and very good as the reviews go. Most people who have to decide between 21 and 24 (or 25), including myself, decide it based on distortion - most agree that 24/25mm is the best balance between wide angle and less distortion. Hope that helps.
CharlesL Posted May 22, 2018 Share #16 Posted May 22, 2018 The 24mm f2.8 ASPH-M Elmar may be the sharpest M lens I own. True, but isn't it 24/3.8 ?
darylgo Posted May 22, 2018 Share #17 Posted May 22, 2018 Leica has many many great lenses in 21 and 24mm. If your looking for the technically best M lens the 24mm f3.8 Elmar-M Asph would edge out the others but in practical terms any Leica M Asph lens in that range will not disappoint you. For the SL the 24-90mm is good throughout it's range, 24mm (zoom) edged out the Elmar-M in my testing, the 90mm end of the zoom range is not as good as the primes. pico Posted May 22, 2018 Share #18 Posted May 22, 2018 I was mislead by the requisite for an Ultra-Wide lens which today is 10mm. Maybe it is better to address the subject as '21mm'.
lct Posted May 22, 2018 Share #19 Posted May 22, 2018 "Hyper wide", "super wide"... I don't understand those new appellations. To me an ultra wide lens has always been wider than 28 but i may be wrong. Never used a wider lens than 15mm BTW so no hyper-super-ultra-wide lens for me anyway .

If you were to try, for example, CV's 10mm lens it might profoundly shift your expectations. This kind of innovation happens only once in a generation of lens development.
