Advertisement Posted April 13, 2018 Posted April 13, 2018 Hi Jdphoto, Take a look here Should we have a film M image thread?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ianman Posted April 13, 2018 Share #2 Posted April 13, 2018 (edited) There is the "I like film" thread but it's not limited to Leica film cameras... I don't know of any other. https://www.l-camera-forum.com/topic/205842-i-like-filmopen-thread/ Edited April 13, 2018 by ianman
michaelm3 Posted April 14, 2018 Share #3 Posted April 14, 2018 There are film threads for M and R Leica cameras in the german section of the Leica forum...quiet interesting! Michael
MarkP Posted April 14, 2018 Share #4 Posted April 14, 2018 But it's the lens and film that determine the image quality of the photograph, not the film camera body. The M camera is just a very nice black box that holds film and to which you can mount a lens.
Pyrogallol Posted April 14, 2018 Share #5 Posted April 14, 2018 If a film M body is just a very nice black box that holds film, then a digital M body is just another computer.
MarkP Posted April 14, 2018 Share #6 Posted April 14, 2018 (edited) If a film M body is just a very nice black box that holds film, then a digital M body is just another computer. Quite right, just a very nice black box that holds a sensor/computer :-) However, the sensor, unlike the film you load into your camera, is part of the camera and so therefore does influence the final result. That's why we have digital M photo threads. Edited April 14, 2018 by MarkP
tom0511 Posted April 15, 2018 Share #7 Posted April 15, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) IMO we have those threads because people like to share images and have fun with their digital or analog cameras. The fact that a analog camera can shoot different films but a digital is reduced to just one sensor doesnt make image threads of the analog camera less interesting (IMO). Sean ASA Posted April 16, 2018 Share #8 Posted April 16, 2018 Quite right, just a very nice black box that holds a sensor/computer :-) However, the sensor, unlike the film you load into your camera, is part of the camera and so therefore does influence the final result. That's why we have digital M photo threads. This is true and people ether like to see images from a camera they are thinking about, or seeing what their own camera is capable of in anothers hand. I do however think a Film M Image thread is a good idea for a couple of reasons. Unlike digital M's 3/4 different sensors (CCD M8/9 CMOS 240 and M10), there are many varieties of film, commercial develops, home scanners etc. Too many to try and experiment with alone. RayD28 Posted April 18, 2018 Share #9 Posted April 18, 2018 There is the "I like film" thread but it's not limited to Leica film cameras... I don't know of any other. That is something I like and dislike about that thread. It's very popular and I don't know how an M-only film thread would effect its following. I for one would like to see an M film thread. Ko.Fe. Posted April 18, 2018 Share #10 Posted April 18, 2018 But it's the lens and film that determine the image quality of the photograph, not the film camera body. The M camera is just a very nice black box that holds film and to which you can mount a lens. It depends what you are capable of with this box. Maybe you are very capable, but I can't take street and documentary photography with SLRs. Even "more advanced" Bessa R RF series are somewhat clumsy... This is where quality of photo depends on camera more than on lens. Do you know what GW used Canon LTM lenses on film M cameras for many years? I have seen his prints, I can't fail them. And it is not always black, but chrome.
250swb Posted April 19, 2018 Share #11 Posted April 19, 2018 Go down the track of too many specialist forums and nobody gets to see much of anything, just quiet little backwaters with only the occasional croak of a toad and buzz of a cicada. Besides which 'image quality' is how good the photograph is, and a film image should be able to compete for attention alongside a digital image instead of being shunted down to the farthest siding in the rail yard. If anybody wants to talk about the 'technical quality' of film there are already two forums that deal with it.
earleygallery Posted April 19, 2018 Share #12 Posted April 19, 2018 The photo forums are where photos should usually be posted. There's different photo forums depending on subject matter. Just put the camera/lens etc used on the post. The film thread was created for different reasons and is open to other cameras/formats to show off the various films/processes. People are used to following the I Like Film thread. I think it would lead to double posting M film photos -- once in the M thread and again in the I Like Film thread. Just my two cents.
Martin B Posted April 26, 2018 Share #15 Posted April 26, 2018 (edited) This forum lacks a dedicated M film photo competition (the current Barnack's contest it limited to screw-mount cameras only) and a dedicated M film thread as well. The "I Like Film" Thread is a good and big one with high visibility, but I see many posts there which are lacking good description of camera and lens usage, which film was used and how it was developed. Difficult to moderate though. Edited April 26, 2018 by Martin B
gberger Posted April 27, 2018 Share #16 Posted April 27, 2018 (edited) But it's the lens and film that determine the image quality of the photograph, not the film camera body. The M camera is just a very nice black box that holds film and to which you can mount a lens. If that's the case, then I'd go for a Zeiss Ikon ZM with its superb viewfinder and auto capability - - and save $4000 Edited April 27, 2018 by gberger
