Dear all

I wonder if anyone can tell me if I can add a (Leica) filter to a 50 mm Summicron (Type 4) when I at the same time want to use a 5€ Chinese screw on lens hood (metal)?

I know that I can just buy the filter attach it and test shoot a film but maybe someone in here has already done the test.

My local Leica pusher answered with the usual arrogance: "No you can not. Buy original". But the original lens hood is relatively expensive and made of plastic as far as I know.

Thanx Søren

I do not own a Summicron v4, but currently have the Rigid and the APO, both with a 39mm filter thread.

I have been using these cheap hoods for ages as well, typically without filter. But I just checked and filter + hood do not seem to cause vignetting on either lens. FWIW, I used a clear B+W XS-Pro Digital to test, but I'm sure other types/brands would work as well.

I'd just make sure the filter has female threads on the front end (most do) - so that the hood can be screwed in - and is reasonably thin.

Given the ridiculously low price of these hoods it might be worth reducing the height of one by reducing its depth by rubbing it onto sandpaper on a flat surface :o.

Yes you can but you'll have to screw the hood into the filter which implies that your filter has an internal filter thread. My Leica E39 UV/IR filters have one at least but i'm not sure about other filters. Otherwise the plastic Leica vented hood (12538 ) works fine and can be replaced by a nice metal one (12585 or 12585H) but it is expensive es expected. Both can be reversed on the lens for transportation.

Soren,

My local Leica pusher answered with the usual arrogance: "No you can not. Buy original". But the original lens hood is relatively expensive and made of plastic as far as I know.

He may be right after all .

So buy one original hood one of what LCT pictured above.

Why I changed my mind -_-.

To be certain that the screw in hood plus Leica filter "1" (yellow) with front thread on my Summicron can be done.

So I tested the combo for vignetting.

But the problem is when I wanted to remove the hood, then the filter, this filter didn't move even with more force to unscrew it.

I understood that the filter was screwed in with much more torque when the hood screwed in.

So I had to remove the filter from the lens the hard way with some tooling.

Leica original hood as 12585 (aluminium) or 12538 (plastic) is a better route if you use Leica filter.

But maybe if you use other brand filter (if larger), the hood may not be pushed in.

Choose your camp :p.
