X Vario vs TL + T 18-56mm?

Hello,

I am being offered a mint condition TL + T 18-56mm lens at a very attractive price. I already have a X Vario which I have enjoyed using for several years, but the slow & unreliable autofocus has frustrated me.

Is the autofocus on the TL better than on the X Vario?

I know both have a 16mp sensor, but are they the same sensor?

How do the JPEGS & DNG files of the two cameras compare? Would I see an improvement from the TL over the X Vario, especially in the jpegs?

Finally, is the auto white balance on the TL better than the XV?

I’d be most grateful for your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Firoze

Ps: Originally, I had been thinking of buying the TL2, but this TL+lens is being offered at such an attractive price, so I wonder if it might be worth swapping the X Vario for it.

Thank you! Good to know the autofocus is better on the T. And is it true that on the TL the autofocus is better than on the T? Since it is a TL that I am being offered, that is what I would really like to know.

With very generation, the autofocus (and other features) has improved. If you can afford the TL2, I’d recommend it. I didn’t like the original T, but the TL2 is much better.

In fact, I preferred my X Vario to the T.

The 18-56 is a very nice lens. I’ve never compared it to the X Vario directly, but perhaps others have.

Thanks for that info. I can't afford a new TL2+lens, so have been looking for a pre-owned one. Meanwhile, this TL offer came along, hence my questions.

The TL and T are identical except for the amount of on board memory. The AF speed is the same. Same sensor. Same functions..... Mostly it was about the name change to the L mount from the T mount due to the introduction of the SL.

The X-Vario AF isn't as good as the T/TL, which isn't as good as the TL2, which isn't as good as the CL, which isn't as good as the SL...... But the TL AF is fine, most of the time. Optically the X-Vario lens is excellent. Maybe a fraction better than the TL zoom but not noticeable in real world shooting. The T/TL/TL2 add on EVF is much much better. The TL lenses are generally spectacular so the TL would make an excellent entry to the system.

Actually the T and TL use the same 16mb sensor as the XV. The TL2 is 24mb.

Also, X Vario doesn’t have an AA filter either, I’m pretty sure.

While I truly love the T and 18-56 combo, I think that the XV’s single-lens purpose makes the coupling of the XV’s zoom with the sensor and processor tighter - and that makes the XV’s output sometimes maybe a bit more special.

There’s no “compromise” within the XV’s sensor/processing architecture to also need to handle other (TL & M) lenses.

This, I think, has something to do with why, to me, the XV zoom is pretty amazing and maybe just a bit better than the 18-56 to my eye - with better microcontrast and shadow details. I love my 18-56 TL lens, but I think the XV’s output can be “creamier”.

OOC output with the 18-56 is just a bit flatter to my eye - but can be tremendously improved in PP. This is more about the sensor and processor however.

Optically I have no doubt both lenses are excellent and can resolve amazing detail.

(Of course, this does not consider the greater usefulness of having an interchangeable lens platform, nor the more limited reach of the XV).
