Aquilasfx Posted April 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I'm a Nikon user (a lot nikon lenses), that I adapted to my Panasonic GH5 with metabones for video works. I really like 28mm focal length, and now I'm considering to buy a 28mm (56 equivalent) for GH5 (stills and videos) In next future I would like to buy a Leica M camera, and I'm considering these two Leica M manual focus lenses: - 28mm Elmarit 2.8 Asph (last version or the version before) - 28mm 2 summicron Asph (not the last, penultimate version) Anyone tried these lenses on M4/3 cameras and tell me if are still good, or not very usable adapting them on Gh5. All the bests, C

FrozenInTime Posted April 29, 2018 Share #2 Posted April 29, 2018 Wide M lenses on m4/3 will only lead to disappointment. Long ago ( Olympus E-P1 ) I tried this and found the cheapest kit zoom was a better option. These days there are great and inexpensive native 25mm lenses ( 50mm efov ) for m43 - buy one of them. cp995 Posted April 29, 2018 Share #3 Posted April 29, 2018 ....- 28mm Elmarit 2.8 Asph (last version or the version before) - 28mm 2 summicron Asph (not the last, penultimate version) Anyone tried these lenses on M4/3 cameras and tell me if are still good, or not very usable adapting them on Gh5... They are usable, of course! If a Leica M is your future desire, it makes sense. My favorite 28mm Leica lens is the last pre asph. Elmarit and I used it on my APS-C Fujis/Sonys before I got a FF camera. mFT and crop 2 is another story and you should think twice about your plans ... I don't want to buy native lenses, I'm good with my adapted Nikon lenses; I don't need autofocus. As explained I would like to buy a Leica camera in the future... They are usable, of course! Do you think is too bad in the corners the 28 elmarit? What about elmarit vs summicron? Edited April 29, 2018 by Aquilasfx
Mark II Posted April 29, 2018 Share #5 Posted April 29, 2018 I think the question has to be why? The thick sensor stack of u4/3 combined with the short back-element to sensor distance of the Leica generally gives terrible results with any adapted lens wider than 50mm - and even at 50mm you may see some blurring at the edge of the frame. You can buy a native u4/3 25mm f1.8 lens (Panasonic or Olympus) for spare change compared to the cost of the Leica lenses. It will be faster, sharper, and with full EXIF data too. jaapv Posted April 29, 2018 Share #6 Posted April 29, 2018 It should not be too bad, as the 4/3rds sensor is only 1/4th of the size of the full frame the lenses are built for., so the edges are far outside the image. I never saw problems on my GX8, but must admit to using the DG-Summilux 15 as a wideangle on it. The Summilux-M 24 is fine (but basically a ridiculous lens to use on a 4/3rds camera. I think the best compromise for the OP would be to get into the CL system.

FrozenInTime Posted April 29, 2018 Share #9 Posted April 29, 2018 why ridiculous? Anyone who tried 28 elmarit or summicron? I have the M lenses you are weighing up and m43 12,15,25,30 and 42.5 lenses. I did look for my novoflex M-m43 adapter, but not having used it for years I can’t lay my hands on it right now to show the evidence on 4k video or stills from a GX85. Adapting long lenses works well but the wide M lenses are not as retro focus in design as say you Nikon lenses, so that thick sensor glass Mark II mentioned is really a killer. If the quality from your Nikon SLR lenses with metabones is not good enough, the M 28mm lenses will be worse. If you want to avoid focus by wire, the chinese or Voigtlander mechanical focus 25mm lenses would be a far better investment both short and long term. I have 24 1.4g, 50 1.4g (manual focusing not good) , 35 2 (not good in manual focus), 85 1.4g, 24-70, 14-24, 70-200 (but I don't like to use my zoom with the GH5) Edited April 29, 2018 by Aquilasfx
FrozenInTime Posted April 29, 2018 Share #11 Posted April 29, 2018 Voigtlander manual focus m43 lens line : https://www.cameraquest.com/voigt_m43.htm
Aquilasfx Posted April 29, 2018 Author Share #12 Posted April 29, 2018 Voigtlander manual focus m43 lens line : https://www.cameraquest.com/voigt_m43.htm Uhm, I don't know, for me I think is a waste of money to invest many budget on m43 native lenses then adapting, specially for video (if AF is not needed...)
