Lightroom proces version 2010 vs 2012 (or Version4)

Hello

Does anyone have any experience with Lightroom clasic CC process version 2010 JUST for  black and white photograph JUST for the Leica M camera (Leica M10 and Leica MD)? (Lightroom clasic CC process version 2010 vs Proces version 2012 or last Version4).

Thorsten Overgaard still uses the black and white process version 2010 and I find that it really looks good (less plastic, more natural look, more comes out from shadows…).

I like the look of the black and white photos of Thorsten.

Any other experiences from others? Any advice?

Only for the black and white photograph of DNG Leica M!

Thank you.

Regards

When Thorsten revealed his preference years ago, I had the opposite opinion about the process engines for my b/w editing and printing, preferring the superior flexibility and controls offered with the new version. This may have been because Thorsten admittedly used only a fraction of the potential controls offered by LR, working in batches and not wanting to spend extra time and effort on individual pics. Having come from darkroom work, the time to optimize my b/w digital files was a relative breeze.

While I haven’t gone back to the 2010 version for years before having the M10, I see no reason why this would have changed. In fact, there have been many improvements to LR in the meantime that have greatly enhanced b/w potential results. The key word is potential, as the results are of course only as good as the user’s skill, eye and judgment. Some, for example, prefer JPEG to DNG because of better out-of-camera results, but others would never sacrifice the use of the RAW files for potentially superior control.

Of course one can make their own judgment by experimenting within the Develop module, as changes are non-destructive and history can be retrieved. I won’t waste my time, however.... been there, done that.

from the Adobe thread>>>

"The major difference is that PV2012 "automatically" detects and sets the Black and White clipping points in your image....its more than just automatically adjusting white/black point (as per traditional tone-curve speak). It's actually totally reshaping the blacks and whites to "integrate" the automatically recovered highlights and shadows, and roll off the endpoints more gracefully...Controlling the tone at the furthest endpoints can sometimes be a challenge in PV2012 - the design characteristic that tries to keep deep shadows deep and light highlights light (to maintain intra-shadow & intra-highlight contrast - which is usually a good thing), and also the persistent roll-off (also usually a good thing) can result in what I call "blind" spots, or "stuck" regions at the endpoints..."
