ESNEL

ESNEL was the first ever-ready case available for the Leica. I had several in my Fontenelle collection, but only noticed now, when inspecting my images, that there were two different : one - probably the very first one - had an attached suspension strap, the other a free one. And I love the embossed Leica logo...

Yes, the embossed or stamped Leica logo on the front of the case is very nice.  It seems to be always imprinted from the front and thus the lettering is recessed below the surface.

Here is a case where the stamp must be from the rear and the lettering stands upward and protrudes forward.

I long suspected it was a copy, but just noticed that the rear edge is marked "Made in Belgium".

Were there independent leather companies in Belgium, or did Leitz contract them to make this case? Has anyone ever seen any other "Leitz" products stamped made in Belgium?

Well, as far as I know, this is a copy. Well known are other copies made in Antwerp, notably of lenses like the Hektor 135. Here are some images from my former collection (already published in this Forum, I suspect).

First photo shows both fake Hektor 135 and Elmar 90.

Second illustrates genuine Elmar 90 nº520000 (last from the 516001-520000 batch) on the left, compared to "Belgian fake" nº653265 at right.

Third : two "Belgian" Hektor 135 with close serials 598134 and 598147.

On the fourth image, one can see the "true" (at right) and  Belgian fake Hektor and Elmar.

And finally, a comparison of the original (left) and counterfeit heads of 9cm Elmar.
