In the boxes which appear on the left hand side activate the appropriate options; you activate and deactivate the selection by clicking once on the option. Open the desired thread by clicking on the fat dot (or asterisk, as the case may be) in front of the thread's title in order to see the first unread post; click on its title to start reading the entire thread from the beginning.
