Hey everyone. I just purchased an M8. I loved the results I was seeing on line and in this forum that I couldn't hold back any longer. It is in like new condition but I have a couple of questions please.

Is there a way to tell how many times the shutter was cocked and at how many should it get servicing?

I'm am very confused when to use the IR reducing filter especially for b and w

Some people say it loses sharpness with the filter others say it needs the filter to be sharp.

Please help

No IR cut filter:

I didn't noticed any significant sharpness loss. It mostly affects dark colors rendering and not always. Even M9 suffers from it, but less.

Google "how to check Leica M8 shutter count". It will lead you to threads were it is explained how to enter service mode and call this number.

We have somewhere here post with M8 shutter quit at one million. I can't recall any recommendation for how often it needs to be serviced.

japan's response is on point for your BW question. If it's a more general IR question related to the weak built in IR cut filter for the M8 and when/why to use an external one. Man made black dyes are actually very dark maroon the camera catches the actual hue. Natural black such as a black cats or trees do not have this problem. (some rare exceptions). Wedding photographers had a problem as Dinner jackets tend to be black. I've got a filter on my camera, put it on and forgot about it. Make sure its a Leica or high end equal though, no point placing a inferior piece of glass in front on lens. Enjoy
