The Wizard Posted March 19, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 19, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey everyone. I just purchased an M8. I loved the results I was seeing on line and in this forum that I couldn't hold back any longer. It is in like new condition but I have a couple of questions please. Is there a way to tell how many times the shutter was cocked and at how many should it get servicing? I'm am very confused when to use the IR reducing filter especially for b and w Some people say it loses sharpness with the filter others say it needs the filter to be sharp. Please help

jaapv Posted March 19, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 19, 2018 It loses sharpness, but lifts the shadows in B&W if you don't use an IR cut filter.
Ko.Fe. Posted March 19, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 19, 2018 (edited) No IR cut filter: I didn't noticed any significant sharpness loss. It mostly affects dark colors rendering and not always. Even M9 suffers from it, but less. Google "how to check Leica M8 shutter count". It will lead you to threads were it is explained how to enter service mode and call this number. We have somewhere here post with M8 shutter quit at one million. I can't recall any recommendation for how often it needs to be serviced. Sean ASA Posted March 19, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 19, 2018 japan's response is on point for your BW question. If it's a more general IR question related to the weak built in IR cut filter for the M8 and when/why to use an external one. Man made black dyes are actually very dark maroon the camera catches the actual hue. Natural black such as a black cats or trees do not have this problem. (some rare exceptions). Wedding photographers had a problem as Dinner jackets tend to be black. I've got a filter on my camera, put it on and forgot about it. Make sure its a Leica or high end equal though, no point placing a inferior piece of glass in front on lens. Enjoy

Graham (G4FUJ) Posted March 20, 2018 Share #7 Posted March 20, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Jeff. My M8 states 2926! Was expecting rather more, so not only have I not used it enough, but neither have previous owners

satijntje Posted April 10, 2018 Share #9 Posted April 10, 2018 Congratulations! Have also a look at the M8 Facebook group with over 1600 members https://www.facebook.com/groups/326047637595813/
max.fortner Posted June 28, 2018 Share #10 Posted June 28, 2018 I don't use the IR cut filter on mine. I have tried it, but apart from black material and low light situations I have never had a fringing problem so far. I think it is part of the M8's character. Happy for you that you got a Leica! Enjoy it!
jaapv Posted June 28, 2018 Share #11 Posted June 28, 2018 Just look at blotchy Caucasian skin tones and bright sunlight (yellow cast) foliage.
lct Posted June 28, 2018 Share #12 Posted June 28, 2018 Indeed it is not a matter of fringing. All colours are more or less affected. https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-SgXf8Mp/0/25c3d42e/O/i-SgXf8Mp.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-PL82SRK/0/5942af55/O/i-PL82SRK.jpg
