noobydooy Posted March 8, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 8, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just bought my wife a used TL body and a brand new Summicron 23 f/2 TL Wide open, this lens has TERRIBLE purple fringing, and moderate green fringing, especially in the corners, but even near center it's bad if the contrast is high enough. Stopped down it seems a little better, but still concerning. Moire is also awful, but my brief research suggests this is normal as there isn't a low pass filter on the TL, is that correct? Did I get a lemon or is this normal? I expected way more for nearly $2k for the lens. Attached is a non-processed dng exported as jpg from lightroom, with a 100% crop showing how bad it is near the center. I didn't even bother posting off center because it was so laughably bad. Thanks, hopefully I can figure this out, as it's very off putting. Welcome, dear visitor! Advertisement Posted March 8, 2018 Posted March 8, 2018 Hi noobydooy, Take a look here Summicron TL 23 f/2, extreme chromatic aberration normal? or lemon. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted March 9, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 9, 2018 There is are a few simple sliders in LR and ACR which will eliminate the problem completely. It is the unavoidable penalty of a highly-resolving lens in extreme contrast situations on a sharp sensor. If it is a problem for you, you should revert to a camera that produces softer images through an AA filter and sharpen in postprocessing.
Ivar B Posted March 9, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 9, 2018 I am not sure that I agree with you, Jaap. I own this lens myself and have never seen anything like this. I would vote for the lemon option.
lanetomlane Posted March 9, 2018 Share #4 Posted March 9, 2018 I have the same lens and have never seen a problem like this.
michaelbogdan Posted March 9, 2018 Share #5 Posted March 9, 2018 I don't know, I think jaap might be right. I get this all the time with the 35 Summilux...
Wojtek Posted March 9, 2018 Share #6 Posted March 9, 2018 I wanted to ask the same question regarding 35mm. I'm absolutely not sure whether it's normal. It's CA is probably highest I've seen on lenses. I'll try to test that.
noobydooy Posted March 9, 2018 Author Share #7 Posted March 9, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Hmmm... So I've had a couple of days to investigate since I posted this, (delayed approval of this post cause of new account)...and I think jaapv is right. I'm not a pixel peeper, so I started pixel peeping at some images i've made with my m240 over the past few years, and I did notice purple fringing in similar situations (usually it's a very pleasant, soft green cast). Posted example. I guess the hot pink/purple is just not as noticeable on my M at web resolutions due to the higher resolution and sensor size. I was hoping the TL to be a great point and shoot for my wife, but it seems I might have to rethink that if she has to do post processing Welcome, dear visitor! jaapv Posted March 10, 2018 Share #8 Posted March 10, 2018 A higher resolution sensor like the TL2 might help - but it won't eliminate the problem completely. OTOH, awareness of the situations that will cause the problem could help avoiding it. i.e., changing position may get the subject against a pleasant background instead of the bright sky, shifting the plane of focus away from specular highlights, etc. In general, photographs that show the problem are not the best ones from a light point of of view.
noobydooy Posted March 19, 2018 Author Share #9 Posted March 19, 2018 It's funny, over the past couple of weeks, I've noticed pink/purple fringing everywhere. I guess I just wasn't paying attention before. Seems to be not even a digital issue, but more just characteristics of sharp lenses and coatings in extreme contrast situations. I see it everywhere now, even on movies shot on kodak film:
Photo and flyfishing Posted March 28, 2018 Share #10 Posted March 28, 2018 Hey, I have also CA problems with Leica T and 23mm 2.0. My camera and lens was send to Germany for check and firmware update, but the problem wasn`t gone... I send new pictures to Leica taken with 23mm 2.0, and other lenses, and CA was not / and less CA problems with other lenses. It was no fail with my camera. The answer from Leica was: lenses have more or less CA, it is normal! After a while I get a deal with the shop, who I bye Leica T and 23mm, to change my lens into an new 18-56mm. Well, it is cheaper and has smaler max aperture, but the 18-56mm has less CA! So, today I am more lucky with this lens on my Leica T.
