earleygallery Posted March 6, 2018 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wellington statue, Aldershot. I've seen this when driving through the area and was amazed by the size of the thing even from a distance. I was driving nearby last week and decided to take a detour to check it out more closely. The statue originally stood on top of Wellington Arch in Hyde Park. The story is quite funny in a way, it was like that 'awkward' ornament you don't really know what to do with but can't chuck out! So it ended up on top of a small hill in a park in Hampshire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equestrian_statue_of_the_Duke_of_Wellington,_Aldershot Canon 5D and Summicron 50 R. Welcome, dear visitor! Michael Hiles Posted March 6, 2018 Share #2 Posted March 6, 2018 Very nice. I wonder some times whether statues like this are actually good likenesses of the great man. Or even the great horse. I assume there are paintings that are reliably good likenesses of the Iron Duke.
stuny Posted March 7, 2018 Share #3 Posted March 7, 2018 James - Very nice. Michael - At least we have reliably accurate likenesses of beef Wellington readily available.
earleygallery Posted March 7, 2018 Author Share #4 Posted March 7, 2018 Read the link it's quite interesting. The horse was a stand in model and drew criticism for not looking like his horse named Copenhagen. I'm assuming the likeness of the Duke was alright though.
