How to buy a Leica M6?

Recommended Posts

Fully functional, as cheap as possible (no limited editions), from a trusted source. Do you have any tried and tested ways of doing it?

Thank you!

From a dealer? That way you get the guarantee. That's probably what I'd do if I was after one (when I bought my m9 I was originally going to by an m6 from Leica Store Manchester). Don't be afraid to haggle, I've got some good deals in the past.

Yes. Look for one going for a good price, that's in full working order, from a reputable dealer. Cheap as possible will mean one in 'user' condition rather than mint, but as long as it's functional what does that matter.

Where was that?! Buy within the EU and the price you see is the price you should pay (plus delivery charge).

Not always though. For example leicashop displays an asterisk for items to which 20% VAT should be added.

Thanks a lot guys

Sadly dealers in Poland don't have M6s :( If your local dealer didn't have one, are there any other trusted alternatives?

The polish market is quite limited when it comes to analog bodies, it is much easier to buy used digital Ms. Personally I bought my M6 from a smaller dealer in Germany. Smaller dealers have often much better prices than Meister or Leicashop...

Another vote for a dealer.

It will be a touch over private sales prices but you not only get the convenience of being able to buy sight-unseen over the phone (it will be as described), the convenience of paying by credit card without the risk of the eBay horror stories one hears about, but you also get the benefit of a warranty which I was very pleased to rely on when my dealer bought M2 was overlapping the frames; the dealer fixed and serviced it pronto.

I already saw "add +21% to the price to include tax" stuff etc (that, +shipping). Still trusted. But not cheap.

The UK is still in the EU (just) there should only be local taxes (VAT in the UK), most UK dealers already include VAT in their advertised price. Then add shipping costs - which should be modest. No export taxes.

Aperture in London have 3 for sale. I've had very good buying experiences with them.

I agree with this completely.

This is a very long-standing used camera/photographic business which has developed a great reputation for knowing their stuff and selling good quality kit. They have a reputation for reliability and extremely importantly, they do a lot of their repairs in-house or through their own trusted specialised repair people. Very rare to give Aperture a repair job or servicing job which has to be sent out and which takes any particular length of time.

These people are not box shifters and they do far more than simply just selling on stock.

Highly recommended

Thanks a lot!

If you know any other reputable dealers, mostly in Europe (but Sherry Krauter sounds like a good idea as well, so maybe even other continents), please let me know. It's actually pretty hard to find a "reputable Leica dealer in france" when you don't speak French etc :)

I don’t think it would be wise to dive under €1150. A second hand Leica analogue M is always the cheapest option, IF you’ve got the money. Because it seldom looses value and sometimes value goes up. Leica bei Meister in Hamburg is trustworthy and has one. If you can’t pay such a price it’s better to go for an M4 for 600€, indestructable.
