Light leak? Flare or shutter? (M4-2)

Hello-

 

I just got my M4-2 back from a repair service for this light leak/shutter issue - a band across the top.

 

I got my first roll back, and 95% of the frames didn't have it - but the last few frames did. None of the frames with my 35mm Summicron had it, only the last few with a 50mm Canon 1.4 LTM with an adapter. Is there any chance this is a lens/adapter issue, or is the shutter still the culprit?

 

Band happend when shot into the direct sun at 1000th, sun behind be at 100th; and also in muted indoor light around 250th.

Is it on the negatives, does it show in the spaces between the negatives? Or on prints or scans?

I am wondering if it is something to do with the processing of the film rather than the mechanics of the camera.

With a horizontally travelling shutter you would not expect to see a band like this.

Something that has happened outside of the camera?

I have the same problem. It only surfaces when i change lenses in broad daylight.

It is a problem with the light trap, easy to fix but send it to someone who has the knowledge.

I thought it was something to do with film processing, but seems I was wrong.

I thought the problems of light leaking round the shutter housing had been solved in the 1930’s, I had a similar problem once changing lenses on an early 30’s model II, but not on later screw cameras which I understand have improved baffles.

I'm pretty sure this is due to slightly slack shutter curtains, allowing light to seep under and fogging the film. A CLA should resolve it.

 

The other possibility is a light leak via the viewfinder but they tend to appear as streaks of fogging vertically rather than the horizontal band shown. They're also generally much harder to fix!
