Leica M-D, how to know which firmware my camera got? I have no idea

From my experience, if you turn the M-D on and after a few minutes the frame lines disappear and camera goes to sleep only to re-awaken when the shutter button is half pushed, you have the latest update. Only one update has been made to the M-D’s firmware.

In your place, I would upgrade to last firmware 1.0.0.5

Only two firmware released for M-D (typ 262).

 

The last change add only two lenses, see the guide how to update.

 

The first release is more important, as not to discharge the battery when user forget to turn M-D off.

yes I have made upgrade to other cameras and it is really scary.

I bought this camera new in 2015, and I haven´t done anything to it.

 

so what is the new feature firmware upgrade add?

So before update how did it behave?, my M-D does the same as you say, should I try to upgrade?

 

I wish camera didn´t went off ever, only when changing out batteries.

If your M-D goes to sleep properly then you (probably) don't need to do anything.

The latest firmware release 1.0.0.5 only corrects some bug with using a flash (maybe you use one - I never have) and allows for reading the codes for the new Thambar and 75 Noctilux. If you intend to use either of those lenses to their best effect on the M-D then I think firmware tweaks are the least of your worries!

So, I have an M-D. Is there a possibility to switch the power save to off: the camera to be always on?

I suspect this should require  reinstalling the original firmware the came with the camera, but I can't find it on Leica's website.

It's not possible to turn off the power saving on M-D with new firmware 1.0.0.5 .

I don't know if it's possible to downgrade, I'd not try this as turning off with the main switch became my natural habit.

Even when I forget to turn off, the battery life is so long that a couple of days later of leaving the M-D on did not deplete it's battery.

It's safe as usual having a second charged battery.

My biggest frustration with using md is that it stays on until the battery runs out. How did you make him stand by. . .

Check which version of your M-D firmware, copying a file in a computer.

I think the first original firmware behavior is "never sleep" correction in later firmware.

Just set to off when you don't use by now.

Or ask Leica ...

Thank you. I found that the latest version is 1.1.0.0, but version 1.0.0.4 updates the 10 minute standby function. I'll try to update it.

I've just downloaded 1.1.0.0 for the M-D, and the instructions contained in EN_M-D FW-UPD -Lens Profile- Release Notes.pdf  - a document  titled LEICA M-D (TYP 262) Firmware update - solve the OP's problem of determining what version is currently in his camera.

The text reads as follows:

      "Find out which firmware version is currently installed

       Select Camera Information in the main menu
       The current firmware version is displayed next to the menu item Camera Firmware"

The German word that comes to mind is "schlamperie".

Unfortunately it is not possible to downgrade the firmware by yourself, according to Leica.
They can do it. Have had this done for my M 240 there.

Scottish sloppiness, please - Scottish sloppiness. But my near 80 year old fingers and eyesight often cause minor 'typos' in what I write.

However despite its age, my brain is still capable of remembering that my M9-P has a rear screen, but my M-D does not. So I'm doing better than the anonymous author of the firmware instruction document that I cited earlier.

 

In response to the OP's original question, the free Irfanview graphics software can show the firmware standard of the M-D, but you may need to install one of its addon packages in order to be able to open DNG files.

Importing a DNG file created by the M-D, then selecting Image > Information > Exif information, will show the firmware standard as a line item 'Software'.

I would say you nailed it quite well with the term Schlamperei. But then it should be called a german one in this case.

Never had an M-D, but I hope they will work similar to my M (240), apart from the missing screen. At least with my files I can see the firmware version in various softwares that can display EXIF data.

In CaptureOne you can see it in the file info section:
