bags27 Posted February 17, 2018 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks to anyone reading/responding. Just about to buy my Q. 1. Seems most places in the US are currently out of the Leica screen protector. Is there a substitute folks like? or should i wait for a restocking? 2. More importantly, I'm aesthetically agnostic about silver or black, but favoring the black because it's cheaper. I remember someone suggesting that the silver version might, might have a bit stiffer main switch, so that you don't go as easily from off through S right to C. Has anyone found that to be the case? thanks much! Edit: I think I've found the Leica screen protector and ordering it, but still curious. thanks. Advertisement Posted February 17, 2018 Posted February 17, 2018 Hi bags27, Take a look here 2 minor questions before I buy. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wda Posted February 17, 2018 Share #2 Posted February 17, 2018 The Leica version is probably sourced from a reputable third party supplier, as did I.
Mark Lyka Posted February 18, 2018 Share #3 Posted February 18, 2018 Confirmed: The silver switch still slips to C way too easily. Firmware reversal of switch setting would fix.

Mark, the control switch should not slip from its setting. I would advise getting it fixed. I doubt that it is a body colour issue unless a whole production batch suffers an identical problem.
HighlandK Posted February 18, 2018 Share #5 Posted February 18, 2018 In my view it all comes down to how vigorously you move the switch from its off position. A vigorous movement from off will leave you in 'C' but you will notice the check as it passes 'S'. 'Slips' implies either free movement or that there is no check as you move it to 'S' but it slips to 'C'. That is certainly not the case with mine and if it is happening I agree with David that is something that should be fixed.

To answer your second question in a different way, I also recall seeing a post that claimed that the finish on the black version was more likely to wear off over time, whereas the silver was applied in a different way and was more resistant to wear. I don't have personal experience with this, nor can I recall where I read this or who posted, just FYI.
mctuomey Posted February 18, 2018 Share #7 Posted February 18, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Black will show wear more visibly because the underlying metal is light colored, which doesn’t appear as obviously with the silver finish. Re the on/off switch, its relatively light mechanical resistance combined with its short travel make it easy to overshoot the the first decent. Some variation between cameras, but the few i’ve tried were all the same. Turn the switch between thumb and forefinger and you won’t overshoot.
bags27 Posted February 18, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted February 18, 2018 Thanks all. Ordered the black, as the silver, esp. with the lens hood, is just a little too conspicuous for me. First thing I'll do is cover the red dot with tape, and maybe my wife won't notice I have this!
Mark Lyka Posted February 18, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 18, 2018 My Q switch does not "slip," I suppose, but it takes very little to brush it C-ward with the tab close to the front edge. I believe it is within tolerance, however. If the switch were reversed, the tab would be more inward to the body and out of the way. S could then stand for Series and C for Controlled ;-). likealot Posted February 19, 2018 Share #10 Posted February 19, 2018 In terms of the screen protector, dont waste your money on a Leica official one. Just get a screenprotector for a DS or PSP and then use it for the Q. Might need to cut out a small section of it. Works absolutely fine and you cant tell the difference.
falcon468 Posted February 19, 2018 Share #11 Posted February 19, 2018 Can you wear out the S/C switch by turning it off and on between shots? In other words, is it only designed for so many on/off cycles, similar to a camera shutter cycle.
jaapv Posted February 20, 2018 Share #12 Posted February 20, 2018 Well, given that the stop is a small sprung ball, I would suggest a few hundreds of thousands of clicks?

I absolutely second this suggestion. There's no reason to waste money on a Leica or other camera-specific brand of screen protector. Just get one made for any smartphone and trim to fit. You can use the protective film that ships with the camera as your template. I've done this with my cameras and haven't paid more than $10 for a protector. Ironically, my Q is naked as I never got around to it but it's been fine so far.
jmschuh Posted February 21, 2018 Share #14 Posted February 21, 2018 Do it yourself? Never. I have been using a screen protector from atFolix, the crystal clear version, on all my cameras for years. I buy it for 5 Euro (3 pieces) at Amazon. The atFolix is invisible, but protects against scratches. The original screen protector from Leica was on my camera display for one day only. The part is like a milk-glass pane, reduces contrast and makes it difficult to see the screen and the colors. Total overpriced junk.
Leica Guy Posted February 21, 2018 Share #15 Posted February 21, 2018 Do it yourself? Never. I have been using a screen protector from atFolix, the chrystal clear version, on all my cameras for years. I buy it for 5 Euro (3 pieces) at Amazon. Is there one specifically for the Q or have you used one for another camera that fits? Thanks.
jmschuh Posted February 22, 2018 Share #16 Posted February 22, 2018 Is there one specifically for the Q or have you used one for another camera that fits? Thanks. It is a version for the Q, fits exactly without any problems.
bullmoon Posted February 22, 2018 Share #17 Posted February 22, 2018 Agreed - Leica Q screen protector is horrendous and ruins the beautiful display with a grainy surface that makes every shot look bad. Waste of money.

Leica Guy Posted February 23, 2018 Share #19 Posted February 23, 2018 wow. I have the Leica protector. crystal clear. maybe a more recent batch (just bought it last week)? My Leica protector definitely has a matte finish. I plan to switch to a clear one recommended above.
bencychin Posted February 23, 2018 Share #20 Posted February 23, 2018 wow. I have the Leica protector. crystal clear. maybe a more recent batch (just bought it last week)? The staff of Leica Singapore told me the "newer" version of Leica screen protectors are matt type. They are sold in single piece pack. The "older" version of Leica screen protector are clear type. They are sold in pack of 2. Same pricing, so you can say clear version is cheaper, provided you need 2? I use third party screen protector at very affordable prices - generally below EURO 6/- each.
