New user - a bit of fun

I did some photography a number of years ago but hadn't focused much on it for a number of years (with the exception of astrophotography using dedicated equipment).

I looked at the Sony A9 and A7RIII but didn't like the build quality and the hand holding. In addition I don't care for more pixels as I don't plan to print large and I don't do sports. I also tested the M10 but it didn't feel great in my somewhat large hands.

I ended up buying the SL and delighted with the use (about one day). In addition I bought the 24-90 Zoom (massive) and also ended up with second hand Noctilux. I have to admit that manual focusing is really very enjoyable and for now, I haven't touched the SL zoom. It will get used when fast auto focus will be needed.

I went out and took a few pictures, please be kind, I'm re-learning everything. Some (or all) are a little exaggerated but I will lean to tone things done. And I'm sure better pictures can be made with a"normal" 50mm but I don't care...

Pictures taken in London.

You are Neil and I claim my £5! :D

Have fun. What kind of photographer do you aspire to be; what themes are you interested in?

Welcome to the forum! You've made a great choice. I got the SL initially for my M lenses and when I got the 24-90mm it felt huge. After a year or so, I "rediscovered" the zoom and it has now its regular place, and the M lenses continue to delight.

I’m afraid I don’t know who Neil is but thank you very much for the encouragement. Focus will be city / architecture / landscape and family,

At some point I will buy a 28mm, probably Summicron if it feels easy to handle with the SL.

I will also go on a Safari later in the year and will rent the 90-280mm considering I will have limited usage after that (and despite the glowing feedback on this lends).

Frederick -

Welcome to the forum.  These photos are very promising, but I'd like to see them bigger.  You can post images up to 1280 pixels on the larger side, and up to 500 MB file size for a post (which could included multiple photos ion the file sizes are small enough.  If you become a sponsoring member you can post up to 1000 MB per post.

Considering your photographic interests and intents, renting the 90-280 for Africa is a good idea.  To help you plan your Africa trip you might want to check my wife's trip notes and my photos on our site:  www.barbara-and-stu.com.

I look forward to seeing many more of your images.
