I use wordpress.com. The interface can be a bit frustrating, but this is also true for most blogging platforms. The advantage of WP is that you can start with a free option and migrate to something more sophisticated later if you like. WP is also very well supported - and if you do not like the company it is relatively easy to migrate your blog elsewhere.

 

Most blogging platforms are optimised for text rather than images. However, you could also look at sites such as Smugmug or Zenfolio, which are more flexible in their handling of images and can be heavily customised. However there is usually more proprietary lock-in as a result.
