Keith, the a7rII needs to know focal length only if stabilization is switched on.

The IBIS comes in very useful when I put my 135mm APO-Telyt-M on the A6500 - a stabilised 203mm tele!  :)  I have set-up the C1 button so that when I fit a M or R lens I can quickly set the appropriate focal length whilst retaining stabilisation.
