Jeffry Abt Posted January 29, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2018 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Having just now entered into the world of the little CL, I’m thinking about purchasing the APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm f/2.8 ASPH. Do any of you have experiences to share when using that lens with the CL? I live a long way from any Leica dealers, so I can’t go check out the lens myself before I purchase. As of now I only own the 18mm. Please post a few shots. (Until now the M has been my only serious Leica camera.) Advertisement Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Hi Jeffry Abt, Take a look here APO-Macro-Elmarit-TL 60mm f/2.8 ASPH,. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
grahamhoey Posted January 29, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2018 I have this lens. Amazing portrait lens. Fairly large compared to M glass but small compared to SL lenses. Super sharp.
scott kirkpatrick Posted January 29, 2018 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2018 I like it a lot. It's competitive with the R 100 macro and S 120 Macro, has no bad habits when used wide open, focuses fast and accurately. It's quite a bit lighter than the TL 35/1.4, although it is about the same size. Awesomely sharp when you are careful. LocalHero1953 Posted January 29, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2018 (edited) I posted a number of images with the lens at the start of the CL image thread (around post #22), when it was my only native lens. I use it with AF in the normal range, and manual focus for macro. It can take a lot of turning of the focus ring to shift from the normal range to macro (turning it fast is the trick, because it is non-linear focus-by-wire). This is not too much of a hardship, compared to the R and M equivalents, which all require separate adapters. I still have just the 18 and the 60, and don't feel the need for anything else. alainD Posted January 29, 2018 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2018 I bought it recently to replace the 55-135mm as a portrait lens. The 60mm is incredibly sharp, colors are gorgeous. However, it is not very fast to focus, very far cry from the 35mm. A couple days ago, I tried to use it to take pictures of a two year old in the evening, indoor, with crappy light. The lens was way too slow to focus and could not keep up with the toddler. I switched back to the 35mm and the 18mm, and things were fine. When the light is better, I have no problem focusing. ropo54 Posted January 29, 2018 Share #6 Posted January 29, 2018 (edited) Did someone suggest that the 60 2.8 TL was sharp? (Taken w TL2) Welcome, dear visitor! Alistairm Posted January 30, 2018 Share #7 Posted January 30, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) Echoing the sentiments here, it is a terrific lens. Very sharp, autofocus is accurate and renders very nicely for mid-telephoto (eg portrait) work. I have actually listed my S 120 Macro for sale as I don't see myself using it much now that I have the TL 60 Macro.
scott kirkpatrick Posted February 5, 2018 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2018 Here are some more recent sunny day outdoor shots with the CL and 60-Elmarit-TL C1010426 by scott kirkpatrick, on Flickr C1010400 by scott kirkpatrick, on Flickr C1010384 by scott kirkpatrick, on Flickr I was using f/8 and 1/250 generally, so shooting into the shade the ISOs were 1000 or 1250.
Wojtek Posted February 5, 2018 Share #9 Posted February 5, 2018 I don't see many people sharing my opinion here, but how me 60/2.8 was incredibly bad at focusing. The focus might miss and than hunt for 3 seconds (!!!) or so, without getting the job done anyway. Maybe it's the case with all macro lenses (I don't do marco and have no idea, but 8 years ago or so my cheap Sigma with macro option didn't hunt at all), or maybe it was a flawed 60/2.8, I have no idea. Here are two pictures I was able to accomplish with it though. You probably won't see the quality because I'm restricted to 500KB for both pictures, but believe me they are super sharp Welcome, dear visitor! scott kirkpatrick Posted February 5, 2018 Share #10 Posted February 5, 2018 I don't see many people sharing my opinion here, but how me 60/2.8 was incredibly bad at focusing. I am not having any problems focusing this lens on the CL. I use spot focus and find something with an edge or contour. I've also used single field at times. Of course, sometimes it takes a few tries to grab a very near object when other stuff is visible in the background, but that's true of any autofocus system. If the AF goes off in an obviously wrong direction, I'm used to backing off the shutter and pressing again. That seems to send it back in the other direction. Portraits of people in a studio may demand more rapid response than I usually need, but the CL has been doing fine for me. Its AF is great with the 23 and the 11-23, just fine with the 60 and the 55-135.
tom0511 Posted February 5, 2018 Share #11 Posted February 5, 2018 AF on the CL with the 60 is faster and less / no hunting than on the TL2. I think it is a very good lens which is sharp but also nice for portrait, and with a nice bokeh. Quite usefull focal length.
Wojtek Posted February 5, 2018 Share #12 Posted February 5, 2018 OK so I definitely got something not working right there. When it tried to focus and missed it was super slowly moving the focus in and out for about 3 seconds without a way to stop it. So, please ignore my comment about AF and appreciate my comment on great IQ
Le Chef Posted February 5, 2018 Share #13 Posted February 5, 2018 Wondering which would be the better combination for landscape + street + macro: 23mm + 60mm or 18-56mm + 60mm?
tom0511 Posted February 5, 2018 Share #14 Posted February 5, 2018 Wondering which would be the better combination for landscape + street + macro: 23mm + 60mm or 18-56mm + 60mm? for my taste: 11-23+60 except for low light and shallow DOF in shallow places: 23/2.0 The 18-56 comes into play if you want to bring just one lens. First impressions with the Cl are much better.

LocalHero1953 Posted February 5, 2018 Share #19 Posted February 5, 2018 OK so I definitely got something not working right there. When it tried to focus and missed it was super slowly moving the focus in and out for about 3 seconds without a way to stop it. So, please ignore my comment about AF and appreciate my comment on great IQ That was my experience with the lens on the TL2. On the CL, the focus speed is an order of magnitude faster and far less/no hunting.
mhoutman Posted February 12, 2018 Share #20 Posted February 12, 2018 This might be my next lens but I can hardly find any well written review. Anyone here to my aid?
