leica1215 Posted January 25, 2018 Share #1 Posted January 25, 2018 Advertisement (gone after registration) since SL is limited on using HSS, I try to use the LED constant light, theoretically the result should be the same wether the constant light or flash ( strobe). but they two look different for example F8 /125 sec indoor for low key portrait, flash black out the background, and LED just don't do it. can't figure it out why? Advertisement Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 Hi leica1215, Take a look here constant led light vs flash?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jenningsmca Posted January 25, 2018 Share #2 Posted January 25, 2018 The portable flashes Leica has available for SL due support HSS but the problem lies that they need to be connected to the camera physically or tethered via cable. I have not found any wireless devices which can give you wireless HSS freedom. Leica needs to pull their head out of the a@# for this to happen. Flash support is realistically not there for Leica, not enough interest by third party to create the wireless devices. I have moved onto constant lighting of LED but they just don't throw the light that far; very surprised. MJ

The flash you're used to is simply MUCH brighter than the ambient light and causes what it isn't illuminating to be underexposed. The way to get the same effect with LEDs is to use MUCH MUCH MUCH brighter LEDs.. Of course, I think light like this is ugly as sin so I hardly ever use flash this way.
sillbeers15 Posted January 26, 2018 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2018 Yes. I also feel the frustration that Leica is the only camera maker that is left out without a wireless HSS solution. For indoors application, manual flash wireless triggers are fine to control manual flashes via slow speed sync of 1/80. If you use the M mode on camera, most manual flashes and triggers can sync at speed up to 1/250. For outdoors to overpower the sun to fill, I suppose only use a Nikon comparable cord to do HSS OCF or alternatively to use LED light to fill. I hv no experience with LEDs till date but have been watching multiple YouTubes on this subject. I see that most LEDs still cast a relative distance shadow except the Rotorlight Neo seem to cast a soft light good enough for portraits. Are we still in the 1950s with such topics as Leica offer users no TTL/HSS OCF solution?

sillbeers15 Posted January 28, 2018 Share #6 Posted January 28, 2018 http://priolite.lighting/control-a-hot-sync-leica/ Gordon Thanks for the tip Gordon, but I need to first buy a donkey and pay for its travel cost when I travel before I consider Prolite solution. With Profoto A1 around, the Prolite solution is a dinosaur indeed.

Hi Can you show the photos and the settings for both? All depends on how bright your LEDs are. Mine are not that bright and can only give a light of about 1/30 at f2.8 for a lit portrait (which is about 2 stops above ambient). A flash on the other hand is much brighter and can give enough light to use f8 and give many more stops above ambient.
